Dog Health Symptoms You Should Know About

By Jennefer Poultson

If you are a loving pet owner, your dog's health is extremely important to you. You will notice things in their behavior before anyone else, almost like one of your children. Keeping a close eye on changes and determining if they are acting abnormal can quickly pinpoint key health symptoms. Having some, basic knowledge of common illnesses will let you know more quickly if a trip to the veterinarian is in order.

When considering dog health symptoms, remember that the best thing that you can do to be attentive to your dog's normal behavior. The better you know your dog, the better off you will be when it comes to trying to help him heal. Think about whether your dog is outgoing and patient or more nervous and restive. You'll find that a change in behavior can signify a great deal. For instance, if your dog is typically very friendly but has gone into hiding and whines at being petted, this could be a sign that he is in trouble.

There are a few symptoms that unquestioningly need medical assistance and one of them is blood in the urine. Blood in your dog's urine can be an indication of kidney disease or failure. If that is the case, he will need immediate medical treatment. Your quick action could save your animal's life so do not delay even a moment. Similarly, blood in the feces can point to a common illness called parvo. This virus if caught early can be cured but if left to long will be fatal.

Nausea and vomiting is common in all pets and usually means they have eaten something that does not agree with them. However if the nausea is coupled with fever, lethargy or pain this could be a sign that veterinary attention is required. Repeated vomiting can lead to dehydration and allow secondary infections, which may be fatal. Again, this is where paying close attention to their health and symptoms of common illnesses is vital. Remember too that many times your pet will look fine but be gravely ill they have evolved to be that way.

When looking for symptoms of poor health in your dog do not overlook their coat. A dogs coat should feel thick and look relatively glossy. If you reach down to pet your dog and find that the coat is oddly dry and brittle or there are bald patches you should check into the cause. One common cause of a bad coat is worms; this parasite robs the dog of nutrition and therefore leaves the coat unhealthy. Of course, if you have a dog whose hair is naturally coarse, like a wirehaired terrier then this rule does not apply.

This is not an exhaustive list of possible health problems your dog may face. So always, take the time to examine what is normal for your pet and what is not. This will keep you leaps ahead of the game and could possibly head off serious issues.

House Training a Puppy - How to Go About It

By Geraldine Dimarco

OK, so you've got an adorable pup with big brown eyes looking up at you-if you look down you will also see a brown mound of poop on your newly cleaned carpet. It won't be long before you'll find yourself getting frustrated with your new baby so as early as now, learn all that you can learn about house training a puppy and save yourself from unnecessary bills and aggravation.

Dog potty training is perhaps the first thing you will have to teach your little friend. The good news is that if you start them at a young age, the easier it is for the both of you. Eight to twelve weeks of age is the best time to train them, and when you do so in the right way, it will benefit you for the rest of his canine years.

The most crucial aspect of potty training is the timing. As with most living things-what you eat, you will discharge. Therefore it follows that whenever you feed him, you will have to expect that he will eliminate it after 20 to 30 minutes of consumption. Observe him for the signs that show that he is going to poop or pee soon. Bring him outside so he understands that he has to do it outside your home.

When you take him outside for a walk after mealtimes, bring him to a designated spot you want him to eliminate in. If you see that he is ready to take a poop, say "go potty", or whatever phrase you want him to associate with doing potty. Say it a few times for the next few weeks while you're training him. You are establishing a cue phrase that he will eventually understand and obey on command.

When the young dog eliminates successfully in the place you want him to, affectionately shower him with a lot of praise. Show him what an outstanding puppy he is with what he just accomplished by giving him your undivided attention for several minutes. Doggie treats are also good but generally, it is your approval he wants. If you lavish him with praise and attention-he will try to keep doing what it was that merited that reaction from you.

After a few minutes of happy play time, take him back inside the house. Do not feed him or give him water if you are unable to bring him outdoors after. Remember, you need to establish good habits in the young pup so that he grows up knowing the right way of doing things. Bring him outside for potty after each time he wakes up, after meals and just before his bed time.

Within the next two months of dog potty training, you will probably have a few accidents inside the house. When you see the poop, do not get upset at the little fur ball-he will not understand you. Clean up the mess and continue your training. House training a puppy is not always an easy task but one that reaps great rewards. Enjoy!

How to Correct the Barking of Small Dogs

By Colin Seal

Massive and tiny dogs behave the same way. If big dogs could cause issues due to barking that cannot be controlled, tiny dogs can also do this. So when this misbehaviour happens, you will certainly need the bark collar for small dogs to stop puppy barking. The collar can be effective but it must be complemented by a training programme that can correct the problem. This training will take time and desires proper implementation. It needs the resolution of the owner also. Besides , it can be enjoyable.

Little Barking Dog Training

The tutor should exercise the power of mind and patience as well for small dogs can be stubborn. Simultaneously, you want to utilise the bark collar for tiny dogs in the right way. Keep the sessions short. These should be around 15 minutes each and at least three times per day. The floor must be covered by old newspapers or other materials that may be disposed of once it's been dirtied or after the training routine.

This is important especially when the dog training is focused on defecating or urinating. Choose a good place where the dog has to move its guts till the point that it learns where it should answer the call of nature. Your principal target is to change a poor approach of your pet. It is going to be rough on occasions so you should not show any excitement, irritation or impatience.

Positive Re-strengthening for Tiny Barking Dogs

Positive re-strengthening is applicable for these pets like the bark collar for small dogs. Avoid scolding, roaring or striking the animal. It'll just retard the training process. These are rewards, treats or games that can persuade your dog to repeat an action that you want. It's the best of all training methods. While canine training requires considerable abilities, good dog obedience training should also cover the employment of reinforcements and you're craving to build a healthy and good relationship with your dog.

One valuable facet of using positive re-strengthening is the timing. Reinforcements have to be used or given immediately after the action you want your dog to perform. If you command your dog to jump and it obeys, you need to give the animal something which will make it satisfied. If you deliver a treat immediately after your dog replies, you'll be amazed at how snappy your dog will learn. You should expect that positive training using combined with these tools can generate positive effects.

Your Vet Should Be the One to Make a Dog Health Diagnosis

By Geraldine Dimarco

Holistic dog health care is becoming a natural way for pet owners to provide a dog health diagnosis so their cherished pets are always at their healthiest.

Nutritional needs are perhaps the most important aspect of dog health, and of course a dog's nutritional needs are completely different to members of the human species. Dogs need a certain balance of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to make sure their digestive systems as well as the skeletal system, joints, and organs are kept as healthy as possible. Holistic dog diets usually require proteins, vegetables, and a small amount of grains. They do not need fillers and over-processed foods that are so often a feature of commercial dog foods.

Once you have a dog health diagnosis, you can go the conventional treatment way, or use a combination of various essential oils, flowering essences, plant extracts, and certain herbs. You can consult with a holistic veterinarian, or you could do your own research on holistic dog health care and run your ideas past your vet before embarking upon a holistic treatment regime. These ancient healing practices have in recent years found their way into pet care and are now becoming increasingly popular as more and more dog owners are looking for safer, healthier, and less invasive alternatives to treating their pets.

Canine herbal remedies include calendula and chamomile for treating wounds, with chamomile used to give relief for respiratory compaints as well. Flaxseed mixed with lots of water may help cure dogs who are constipated or have other bowel problems. Oats may help soothe your dog's dry, itchy skin, and smelling lavender may help your pooch get some shut-eye if he is having difficulty sleeping.

Before concocting any type of herbal remedies of your own, make it a point to do plenty of research and be absolutely certain that what you're giving your dog isn't toxic or harmful in any way, as not all herbs and flowers are safe for pets, or even people for that matter. It is always wise to consult with your veterinarian about the proper care and possible remedies for holistic dog health.

Nowadays, many veterinarians are developing faith in a holistic dog fitness approach, and are using it as a way to augment their practices. A veterinarian who practices holistic pet care treats animals as a whole, rather than identifying a certain problem and prescribing one type of treatment related to that specific injury or illness.

A dog health diagnosis from a holistic vet is likely to look at the dog as a whole, so treating one dog with itchy skin may be different to treating another with similar symptoms, depending upon enivorenmental factors.

A holistic veterinarian will be more concerned about the source of the rash and why it happened even though they may still prescribe the two remedies. Keeping holistic care in mind, the dog's indoor and outdoor environment, its daily lifestyle, eating habits and nutritional intake are all to be considered before diagnosing or treating the animal.

How to Identify Kidney Disease in Dogs

By Geraldine Dimarco

Kidney disease is a common and serious condition that can affect many dogs. It is probably one of the leading causes of death in older dogs. There are two forms in which the disease can manifest itself, acute or chronic. The acute form can happen so quickly and suddenly, while the chronic form begins slowly and progresses over time. Sadly for the owner, news of either form of disease is upsetting.

Kidneys are an important organ for the body - human or canine. They are responsible for ridding the body of toxins by filtration. Kidney disease causes the kidneys to function at only about thirty percent of their capacity. If the kidneys stop working, the toxins accumulate in the blood and get deposited in other organs. Subsequently, the dog dies.

Kidney failure in dogs stops the ability of the body to function properly. Toxins begin to build up in their bodies and once this starts, a number of symptoms and warning signs will more than likely become apparent. These two chronic diseases show different symptoms, the acute form can appear more suddenly. Often, dogs suffering from this type of kidney disease will possibly have become dehydrated. For the owner to test for hydration, gently pull on the skin of your dog's stomach. This should spring back. If it doesn't, there may be a possibility that your dog is dehydrated.

Another telltale sign of the acute kidney disease is the extreme reduction or total stoppage of urine. Your dog would suddenly stop urinating. It is a very excruciating process as the kidneys become quite painful. This is the most obvious sign. You would notice your pet's arched back or stiff leg movement. In such a case, you would need to rush your precious pet to a veterinarian immediately.

In the case of chronic kidney disease, the symptoms are different and they occur over a period of time. The first indicator is an increase in thirst and consequently water consumption. This is a constant indicator of the disease. The dog might lose his or her desire to eat resulting in excessive weight loss over time. Contrary to the acute kidney disease, in the chronic version, the canine loses control over its bladder function. As a result, it urinates very frequently. As time passes, the process of urinating will cause extreme discomfort and become very painful. It is possible that there might even be blood in the urine or it may become impossible for the dog to urinate completely. Since the chronic kidney disease is a fatal illness, it is advisable to rush your pet to the veterinarian as soon as you see any of the warning signs such as problem in urination, vomiting, lethargy and depression. Any combination of these signs is a sure shot reason to go to the vet. If caught in time, there is hope for cure of this malady.

The treatment that a vet will start, for this very serious ailment, is typically four staged. The first step is to carry out a physical check up to eliminate other reasons for the symptoms. Next is the verification from the owner regarding the history and symptoms of this disorder. Then there will be tests - a blood test and finally a urine test to confirm the prognosis.

What Is An Effective Dog Arthritis Treatment?

By Geraldine Dimarco

One of the prevailing canine condition that veterinarians are tasked to treat is arthritis in dogs. It strikes about one out of every five dogs throughout the world. It is much like osteoporosis in people in terms of symptoms and its corresponding treatment. The difference is that while human beings develop a gradual deterioration of the bones-some cases of canine arthritis manifest significant physical and behavioral changes in as little as a few short weeks.

So how do we find out if the dog has arthritis? You will know this if the dog has decreased mobility, gains weight, is reluctant to exercise, limps, does not want to be touched, develops a change in attitude and finds it difficult to rise from a seated position. If your dog is displaying these symptoms, you are likely to have an arthritic pet.

There are several types of arthritis the canines experience but they generally fall under two categories: primary and secondary arthritis. The former type is caused by the natural degenerative process that occurs in older dogs, while the secondary is developed because of a trauma sustained by the animal.

With all the action these furry friends of ours do, it's not hard to see why arthritis in dogs is prevalent when untreated. Of course, we need to do whatever we can to avoid them to have to suffer debilitating diseases like these. Fortunately, we can get a great dog arthritis treatment in many specialty canine shops online.

Prepare healthy food for the animal. A food plan rich in nutrients will ensure that the dog will get all the minerals he will need to fortify his bones. Regular exercise and a good diet help maintain the correct weight, and more than that, enhances his health. Remember, a robust immune system will ward off infections and other possible ailments that secondary arthritis may complicate.

Arthritis is the result of the deterioration of the protective covering around the bone in its joints. There are several supplements available that serve to recondition the damaged portions of this covering, also called the cartilage, as well as increase your pet's mobility. Check out sites or ask experts on what is the best dog arthritis treatment that can be used in conjunction to the animal's diet.

Anti-inflammatory and non steroidal pills are some therapies that pet owners give their dogs to ease the stiffness and pain that arthritis brings about. Guclosamine and Omega fatty acids are active ingredients of over the counter medications that is said to alleviate the symptoms of this condition. Inform your vet in case you consider administering any sort of pill or drug to your dog.

Regular check-ups with the vet will prevent serious sicknesses to come upon your pet. If you think that your dog has arthritis, have a thorough physical examination immediately. Canine arthritis can be prevented and easily treated when it is detected early enough. Acquire the correct prognosis and begin the recommended treatment plan as soon as possible.

The Puppy Potty Training Diaries

By Geraldine Dimarco

Dog potty training is a dirty job but somebody's got to do it, pun intended. The good news is-- it's not as difficult as it sounds. Sure, you'll have a couple of months of accidents here and there but then again, you'll have them anyway so you might as well train them now.

Do you want to know what experts do to make puppy potty training easier? What is the secret to their poop free home? It is none other than crate training. With canine crate training not only will your dog be taught how to potty properly; you can also begin to make travel plans with your pet. Doesn't that sound great?

For those of you who don't know what crate training is, this is when the dog is trained to go to his crate and stay there for longer periods of time. Because dogs do not like discharging on the same place they stay in, they will hold in their poop or pee until you can bring them out to potty. Therefore, crate training a puppy is an effective tool in potty training them.

Look for a crate that the dog won't be able to walk around in; but large enough so he can comfortably stretch, sit and stand in. Your goal is to make it as inviting as possible so find a crate that has padded floors and put in a cozy blanket and some fun doggie toys. Put the crate in a place where people usually stay. You can also put it in your bedroom so that the puppy can start getting up and sleeping the same time as you.

Let the dog enter the crate without having to physically force him in it. You can do this by feeding him treats while edging towards the crate. Do not close the crate's door. When inside, continue to feed him and gently block the crate with your body if he tries to leave. This is to be done for a few days.

When it appears that the puppy is ready for the next step, shut the door. Leave behind a favorite toy to keep his attention and make sure that you are close enough for him to see and hear you. If he begins to cry and whimper, let him be until he settles down. Never let him out if he is upset because he will think that crying will get him what he wants.

Gradually, he will be used to confinement. Go out of the room for 5 to 10 minutes and come back in. lengthen the intervals you are gone until you think that he can be left on his own completely. The important thing to remember that puppies have weaker bladders so never leave him alone for more than 3 hours when you are crate training a puppy.

Canines are instinctively den animals-meaning they seek the security that dens and crates provide. Pet owners say that even after their puppy training is done, the dogs still seek out their crates as their retreat from stress and noise. It all sounds like a great deal to me-so what are you waiting for? Take your precious little mutt and begin crate training them today.

Urinary Tract Infection in Dog

By Geraldine Dimarco

Dog urinary tract infections are common among a significant percentage of the dog population in the entire world. The culprits behind dog urinary problems are bacteria which have infiltrated the dog's body. Bacteria enter the dog's internal system through the food it eats and the water it drinks everyday. In some instances, bacteria gain access to the dog's urinary system through its external urinary openings. This is most common in female dogs because they have shorter urethra than their male counterparts, making it easier for bacteria to penetrate.

There are several ways to tell if your dog is suffering from urinary tract infection. It is important that as a dog owner, you be alert and knowledgeable enough to know the telltale signs of urinary tract infection in your dog. Some symptoms may include blood in the dog's urine, a foul smell in the dog's urine, a change in its urinating pattern, and an abrupt change in its behavior. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a veterinarian so your dog would immediately be given proper medication.

Dog urinary tract infection is a rising health problem in today's society. Previous studies have revealed that many of the entire dog population in the whole world is bound to contract canine urinary tract infection.

How can your dog contract UTI? Dog urinary tract infection could arise when any of these types of bacteria get into your dog's body and overcome its immune system: proteus mirabilis, escherichia coli, pseudomonas, coagulase positive straphylococcus, esterococcus, or klebsiella. These types of bacteria could get into your dog's system through the food they eat and the water they drink everyday. Likewise, dogs can develop UTI through an instance called 'ascending UTI', a condition which occurs when the bacteria had gained access into the dog's internal system through its external urinary openings.

Another way to tell if your dog is showing signs of dog urinary problems in their early stages is to observe your dog while taking it out for a walk. Any sign of irregularity, such as cringing in pain, may be a sign that your dog has urinary problems. Foul-smelling urine, blood in the urine, tender bladder, and a reduction of the amount of the dog's urine are signs that you should bring your dog to the veterinarian immediately. If left untreated, your dog could suffer from a more severe case of infection and eventually die.

A combination of these natural ingredients can bring effective relief to canine urinary tract infection.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, then chances are your dog has UTI. In such cases, it is best to bring your dog to the veterinarian so that it will be given proper medication. Do not try to give your dog antibiotics from your shelf, which are usually prescribed for humans as such medicines may not be advisable for dogs. It is always best to consult a veterinarian before giving your dog any medication.

The above-mentioned natural remedies for dog urinary tract infection are effective ways to help boost your dog's overall health and well-being. However, it is still best to consult a veterinarian for whatever health problem your dog encounters. The veterinarian is the only person who could assess the true condition of your dog and who could administer the right medication and dose required to ultimately improve your dog's condition.

Service Dog Equipment For Handicapped People

By Jill Faulkner

The need for working pets is greater than ever, and this means there are many people who need service dog equipment. Most people think of these animals as being utilized by the blind. However, there are a number of disabilities where a working pet is being utilized to increase the ability of handicapped people to remain independent.

Wounded soldiers often utilize working animals to help them in a variety of ways. For individuals who have experienced brain injuries, their vision or hearing might be impaired without being completely lost. In addition, someone suffering seizures or nervous ticks from an injury might need a working pet to warn others of a seizure, or simply to protect the wounded Vet.

It is an unfortunate fact that the public does not always respond to these animals in a positive way. Not every disability is obvious to everyone around, and simply because a person does not carry a white cane does not mean the animal is not their assistant. The public needs to be better educated about this fact so that misunderstandings can be avoided.

There have even been instances where these animals have been kicked because someone was afraid of it. These pets are trained to never react violently against a human being, no matter what. With such training, to abuse such an animal is about the lowest a person can go, and the owner of the working pet has every right to press criminal charges against anyone who tries to hurt his or her animal.

If anyone wishes to help one of these wounded warriors, they can purchase and donate any of a number of items that will help identify their working animal. Harnesses, capes, and jackets are all available which will identify the animal for what it is, and possibly have the name of the pet as well. This goes a long way towards preventing misunderstanding, and helping to keep these sweet animals safe.

These pets receive a great deal of training specific to the individual who will receive them, and this is very costly to Vets and their families. By donating training hours one can help these soldiers get the assistance that they need, even if they are on a limited pension. It is important for us to provide these support networks to wounded Vets who were injured through no fault of their own.

It has been discovered in recent years that autistic children respond very well to animals, and family members can actually communicate with the children through a pet. Not only that, but children with various forms of autism require protection, and an animal provides that. Disabled people are the most vulnerable individuals in any society, and having a specially trained German Shepherd at their side can definitely deter bullying.

Donating hours of training or service dog equipment to troops, the blind, autistic children, or anyone else who is in need of such a service animal is an excellent charity. Not only that, but helping to provide education to the public is a necessary service. There are problems with the TSA, schools, and sometimes even apartment managers when it comes to the acceptance of these pets in public.

Why Dogs Love Homemade Dog Food

By Geraldine Dimarco

Today, family dogs are fatter and more unhealthy than just a decade or two ago. This is mostly attributed to being less active and eating less healthy diets. Many people feed their dogs special diets after they determine what foods their dogs need to eat, both for regular meals and for special treats. Such dog information allows them to be sure that they are feeding their dogs properly.

Some companies, such as flint river ranch dog food, make human grade dog food, which means a person can enjoy eating it too. If you want to make your own dog food at home, you must do your dog research and learn what your pet should and should not eat. Many dogs have been placed on special diets by their owners, who will first research what their dog should be eating in a regular meal and their treats.

Once the owner knows this dog information, they can be certain they are giving their dogs the nutrients they need. Concerned owners have started to use their dog information to cook and/or bake their own dog food and snacks. Use caution! If you make your own dog food the wrong way, you can end up harming your dog more than helping them.

For example, there may be certain types of fats or meats that your dog's breed cannot eat so you would want to avoid using those. Foods like grapes, chocolate, raisins, and bread dough may be safe for humans but are very bad for your dog, Some companies will make an all natural dog food for you. These companies have done the necessary research and they know your dog information, especially the vitamins and minerals your dog has to have to survive and be healthy. They are also aware of what foods your dog should avoid as they make him sick.

Some companies, such as Flint River Ranch Dog Food, make human grade dog food, which means a person can eat it without becoming ill. Today you can buy dog treats that are safe enough for people to eat. Specialist pet bakeries create these snacks and bake them just as if they were cookies or bread. Ask your pet bakery if you can bring your dog in for samples so you may buy the dog treats he loves most.

Deciding what to feed your dog is only part of the responsibility assigned to you; you also have an obligation to do your research to give your dog the best life possible. In addition to appropriate food, keeping your dog healthy will require plenty of exercise, water, and rest. Remember that your dog needs you to make the wise decisions for him in order to keep him healthy and fit.

American dogs, like American people, are gaining more and more excess weight. They may live contentedly with their owners, but a lot of dogs are less active than they should be and eat less appropriate diets than dogs did only 10 to 20 years ago. We see more illness, more vet bills and dogs with much shorter life spans as well.

Amazing Gourmet Dog Treats Fido Sit, Stay and Roll-Over For

The Truth about Feline Urinary Tract Infection

By Geraldine Dimarco

I think almost everyone in the world loathe to read about dreadful diseases that our pets can potentially suffer from. It is not a pleasant task at all. However, it is the responsible pet owner who does so, knowing that learning about these things can in fact, save his or her beloved kitty's life one day. Fortunately, many of these ailments are preventable and easily treatable with simple measures and natural supplements that are accessible to anybody.

Let us learn about feline urinary tract infection. What causes feline urinary tract infection and what can I do to prevent this? Feline UTI is a common condition that results from infection in the cat's bladder. This produces intense pain for the animal and will lead to permanent kidney and bladder damage, or even death when undetected and left untreated.

Many factors play a role in the development of cat UTI. Infections of this kind can be developed when urine is not released quickly enough. Remember, there is an abundance of bacteria and detrimental substances present in the urine. Without fresh water to cleanse the system and proper disposal of the cat's wastes-- these harmful organisms will stay and infect the internal organs. Give the animal distilled water often and encourage him to urinate frequently.

Diet also plays a big part in maintaining your cat's health. A diet that has a high mineral content may lead to mineral deposits that later form into crystals, or bladder stones. These stones will irritate and infect the bladder; thus causing urinary infections to ensue. Serve meals that are low in magnesium to avoid kidney stone formation.

Older animals also have increased risk of incurring more health problems and UTI is one of these. You need to have regular check-ups with the vet to detect kidney diseases, or any diseases early on. Sometimes, cats are just born with congenital defects that inhibit normal system functions. Consult a trusted expert or vet to see what the most recommended course of action is.

Consult the veterinarian on the recommended treatments you can administer to your pet. Another critical issue in determining what causes urinary tract infection is sanitation. The opening where urine is expelled is also an entrance for bacteria to gain ground.

A simple urine analysis will verify the presence of urine infections in your cat. It may also indicate other health problems that you will have to deal with to abort the progress of any serious disease. Radiographs are also a useful tool for the vet to use in checking for tumors and abnormalities in the cat's internal organs.

A simple urinalysis can verify the existence of infections, crystals and blood in the cat. The urinalysis will also locate health issues that may come up; addressing it early on will terminate the progress of serious diseases. Tumors, cysts and other abnormalities can also be determined by using radiographs. If your cat does have feline urinary tract infection, do not become overly anxious about it. You have several antibiotics and homeopathic therapies you can use to cure your pet. You should know though that when an animal does have UTI, he will most likely have it again in the future so make the necessary measures to avoid this from happening. Discuss all the options available for your cat and choose the best treatment specific to his case.

The Best Ways to Deal with Dog Health Problems

By Geraldine Dimarco

Dogs are a loveable breed - the prevalent pet of choice for most people. As such, studies on dog health problems abound that will help pet owners understand potentially harmful diseases and what can be done to prevent and cure them effectively.

There is a long list of dog diseases that canines are susceptible to. Many are brought upon by infected organisms or parasites that latch themselves on the dogs system, disrupting its regular functions. There are several medicated soaps and shampoos that can combat external parasites like fleas and ticks.

Internal parasites are more dangerous and more subtle in its manifestation during the initial stages of infestation. Examples of these are the tapeworms, hookworms, intestinal worms and heartworms which are very painful for the dog. This can be avoided by ensuring a clean environment and providing a healthy diet rich in vitamins for your pet.

Viral diseases also make its way into destroying a dogs immune system. Canine viral diseases include distemper, herpes virus, parvovirus, canine influenza and hepatitis. Perhaps the most commonly known of all is rabies. Dogs catch this by being bitten by infected dogs, raccoons, bats and cats. Have your animals vaccinated for rabies regularly for you and your pet's protection.

Unless there is a change in the canines environment like the atmosphere, a new visitor (person or animal), etc., any alterations in their behavior should be observed closely. Even if there are too many dog diseases to remember, taking note of common dog symptoms will go a long way in avoiding potentially fatal diseases.

Some changes you should be alert for are anxiety, listlessness, weight loss, shaking, frequent falling and being tired all the time. When you see these symptoms, watch for a few days and make a record of your observations including the time it started and patterns of behavior. Keep the canine in a stress free environment to prevent worsening of his condition. If no improvements are forthcoming, its time to visit the vet and have him checked-up.

Canines cannot adequately communicate whatever discomfort they may be feeling. Some breeds in particular have a high threshold for pain so finding out the source of their problem is challenging to their owner. Other than crying and yelping that dogs do, see their posture and how they carry themselves. If they are stooped forward and lick at parts of their bodies, it is most likely the cause of the pain.

Other dog symptoms you should look out for are loss of appetite, bad odor from orifices, hair loss, bumps or discoloration in the skin, flu-like symptoms and vomiting. A sick dog will have trouble in his urinating; he will strain and only be able to pee in small amounts, so keep an eye on this. Check his eyes and nose for any unusual discharge as well.

Dog health problems are distressing yes, but they are often easily addressed once the condition has been correctly diagnosed. Make it a point to visit your vet regularly so any infection may be arrested in its earlier stages, thus ensuring your pet's health.

In the fast-paced world we live in, convenience is king-or is it? You come across commercial pet feed easy enough and no doubt it is a very convenient way to feed your pet; but for the wise and discerning pet owner homemade dog treats are still better. It may take a bit more time but they are worth it for sure.

There are numerous home made dog treats available right now. All you need to do is drive through any grocery store and find aisles upon aisles of dry pet kibble in all shapes and sizes. Of course this is not to mean that these commercial products are terrible and you'll be a bad pet owner if you feed these to them. Not at all. However, it is a better plan for you to give them food that you yourself have prepared. Here are some of the reasons why it is so.

1. Home made dog treats are a lot healthier. Isn't that the priority of every well-meaning and loving master? By creating your own dog's treats, you can manage their diet well and add in more vitamins and nutrients that will help him to be a good-looking and stronger canine you've always wanted him to be.

2. You are lowering the chance of your pet to be a victim of pet food recalls. While many commercial feed are good, even beneficial in a sense, there is always still a possibility that some colorings and preservatives may be fatal for some dogs. You reduce this potential risk by plying him with more natural fare.

3. It may be that you have a pet that have special health needs. In certain situations, you may need to create specific food plans to help in his recovery. More often than not, the diet is critical to the canine's general well-being. Consult a licensed veterinarian and have your dog examined regularly. Ask him what food he recommends to give your pet and use this information to improve the canine's health.

4. And last but not the least-homemade canine food is a lot more delicious! It doesn't matter what the labels on attractive pet food bags say-I can tell you right now that Fido will love your culinary creations more than the dry kibble in the grocery store. Bake and allow to set pieces of liver or carrots or hotdogs; sprinkle with mouth watering parmesan cheese and watch the excitement in your doggie as you hand feed him these gems.

Now, some people are saying that preparing these treats from scratch will turn out to be more expensive that buying ready-made food. Actually, this is not the case if you plan their menus right. With only a few cups of flour, a couple of eggs and spoonfuls of peanut butter-you can have some very good biscuits that will last for a few months when stored properly. Doesn't that sound good?

Are you convinced yet? Homemade dog treats may take a little more effort but you will never doubt its value when you see how happy you've made your pet. It's OK, don't take my word for it-try it out for yourself today.

The Lowdown on Canine Hip Dysplasia

By Geraldine Dimarco

Canine hip dysplasia - what is it? Simply put, it is a physical deformity usually inherited by dogs when the said animal's thigh is not fitted correctly with his hip bone. Many times it is a skeletal issue but sometimes, it is because the connective tissue that binds the ball and socket of the hip and thigh is not strong enough to keep it together. This can make life very difficult for your dog because even the basic movements can be very painful for him.

Sometimes hip dysplasia is caused when a puppy gets injured in his legs and did not receive the proper medical attention. Oftentimes though, it is a genetic ailment that develops as the puppy matures. When the canine is not given the appropriate treatment at the right time, sometimes he will not be able to walk at all.

OK, this may sound a tad too scary for you. There are things you can do to help your dogs hip dysplasia. An option is surgery of course; however, for most pet owners, they do not go for this because it is too expensive. Now, don't feel bad about it. You can use a natural treatment for hip dysplasia that has been proven effective for many dogs.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are two elements that can help in restoring the damaged cartilage and joint tissues of the dog. While these natural supplements are not going to help in pain management, you will be happy to see a significant improvement in your dog's functioning after about 6 weeks of consistent use. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are generally safe but your dog will have to be on it all the time.

MSM or Methyl-sulfonyl-methane lowers joint inflammation and improves the condition of the connective tissues. This will lessen the pain that your dog will feel. Herbs like dandelion, alfalfa, yucca, licorice and rosemary will also help in alleviating arthritis painful effects.

Feed your dog a healthy diet that is rich in fatty acids and vitamins C and E. It is vital that you monitor their food intake because weight maintenance is critical in a disease such as this. You should integrate light exercise as recommended by your vet, with the natural treatment for hip dysplasia as previously mentioned.

Exercises should not put too much stress in the joints and ligaments of the canine (avoid extreme sports like Frisbee). The important thing to remember is that the goal is not only to build muscle, but to further develop a wide range of motions. You can try strolling around the park, swimming or slowly climbing up and down the stairs. Because hip dysplasia is usually hereditary, your best course of action is to lower his weight and boost his immune system.

Hopefully, these helpful tips on canine hip dysplasia will equip you to deal with your dogs condition effectively. Make sure that your dog has a healthy lifestyle and maintain regular visits to the vet. Enjoy quality bonding time with your pet!

What You Need to Know About Dog Training Collars?

By Geraldine Dimarco

Everybody who owns a pet wants them, at the very least, obedient so they will not pose any harm to society. Dog obedience training is an essential task the pet owner must undertake to ensure their dog's best behavior. One of the tools experts use with training are dog training collars.

The use of dog collars is an issue that a lot of people are arguing about. For some, they prefer that their canines are unrestricted, and the use of these collars does not sit well on them. For others, it is a highly constructive means of training the animal and is not in any way abusive or unsafe for the dog.

What are some of the things we know about dog collars? As aforementioned, these are helpful training implements several experts employ to correct certain potentially destructive traits, as well as accelerate the progress of the animal's development, training-wise. Many people can attest to the value of having these collars prevent their dogs from doing a lot of damage.

Before we can adequately pass judgment on these training implements, we must take the time to learn more about this. What are the special kinds of collars and what are the functions of each one of them? There are mainly four kinds of dog collars. These are the choke collars, the head collars, the pronged collars and the electronic collars. Choke collars are what experts utilize to train the animal for agility. Using these is not as challenging as some would think, and any novice pet owner will have little trouble using it.

Head collars serve to control the direction that canines take; and pronged collars are those for smaller people with bigger dogs-they will help manage the stronger and friskier dogs. On the other hand, electronic collars are what some people use on extremely challenging canines. It is never applied as a tool for punishment, only as a means to enhance training.

Understandably though, many individuals are not comfortable with electronic collars. It is entirely up to the owner and the parameters he establishes on his training.

An important quality you must look for in dog training collars aside from their function is how comfortable it is for your dog. The rule of thumb is that collars should have two to three inches allowance of space. The animals should not wear it beyond 8 hours of training. Otherwise, it may cause irritation and discomfort for your pet.

So what is the verdict on these canine necklaces? As with every form of training, you must use your judgment on whether or not this will be good for your own pet-it is oftentimes a case to case basis. Dog obedience training is an immensely beneficial achievement for you and your dog- build your relationship while you're at it and enjoy a meaningful and lasting relationship with your pet when you do.

Air Travel With Your Dogs in Transport Dog Crates

By Geraldine Dimarco

Traveling by air with your dog can be tricky. The first essential piece of equipment you'll need is a suitable dog crate, but before you look at transport dog crates, you should make sure there are no alternatives to transporting your dog by air. Sometimes it is the only option, and if that is your situation, you should try to make the trip as worry free for your dog as possible.

You've probably heard about dogs becoming injured, lost or even of dogs dying when traveling by airplane. The majority of dog air trips are free from complications of any kind, but you do not want to take any risks when transporting your dog by airplane. Preparation is therefore very important.

Prior to looking at transport dog crates or buying your airline tickets, the first thing you should do is to call the airline to ascertain their current policies in relation to pet travel. If you plan to transport a puppy, you also need to bear in mind the federal regulations that provide that a dog cannot be less than 8 weeks old as at date of travel, and must have been weaned for at least 5 days before the flight date.

Large dogs have no choice but to travel in the cargo section of the airplane, in transport dog crates. The cargo section unfortunately has neither airconditioning nor heating, which can make for a pretty uncomfortable experience for dogs. Small dogs may be a litte luckier. If they're under 15 pounds, they may be accepted in the passenger compartment of the airplane, traveling in transport dog crates or other types of pet carriers that will fit under your seat.

These are some steps you can take to ensure a less stressful trip for your pet if you need to transport them by airplane:

- try to book a direct flight where possible. Plane transfers and other stop-overs make the trip lengthier than it need be for your dog.

- try to minimize unexpected delays by confirming your flight before you leave home. That way you'll know in advance of changes to the expected departure time.

- take your dog for a walk shortly before you leave for the airport.

- find out from your vet whether you should provide food for the trip. You'll probably find that your vet will advise you not to feed your dog for several hours before the flight, but an onflight feed may be needed depending upon your dog's usual diet, as well as factors such as your dog's age and size.

- make sure your dog will have a good supply of water during the flight in order to keep him properly hydrated.

- it's good practise to plan to arrive early at the airport. This is especially important when you're traveling with a pet, as there are more things that can hold you up.

- if you are leaving from a destination that's close to the airport, make sure your dog is given an opportunity to toilet just before you leave. If you are a distance from the airport, wait until you arrive at the airport before toileting your dog. Either way, it's important that your dog has a toilet opportunity to avoid accidents in the transport dog crate during the trip.

- before boarding your dog, stay with him for as long as the airport staff will allow you to. And ask whether it is possible for you to personally deliver your dog to the gate.

- tell your flight attendant as soon as you board the plane that you have a dog in the cargo area.

- make your way to the baggage area as soon as possible after landing, to meet your dog.

By doing this, the cost of production is low. The profit is high due to the public buying the product at a reduced price than that of the premium product. Most pet owners are not concerned with what the label on the bag reads. Many just buy their dog foods blindly and feel happy enough with what they are feeding their pet. Fillers (cheap additives) are included to make the food taste good.
