An Apple A Day for Doggie

By Jerry Welsh

Pet parents have the habit of sharing their foods with the pets because dogs are well. A responsible dog owner would make it a point to know the people food that must not be given to the pet. Apples are highly nutritious for humans but is the fruit really dangerous to dogs? Can the dog derive the same benefits humans get from eating apples?

Apples are favorite treats of dogs. These luscious fruit contain phytonutrients that are proven to help in the prevention of some types of cancer. These crunchy treats for the pet is a good source of dietary fiber and vitamins A and C. One of the common ailments of dogs is hip dysplasia and the vitamin C found in apples can help in the prevention of this disease. Apples contain high levels of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. The nutrients found in apples will help prevent some canine diseases and ensure the good condition of the skin and coat thus pet owner make sure that the fruit is included in the diet of the pet.

An apple a day will keep the vet away. Like humans, dogs too would gain healthful benefits by eating fruits. Some dogs owners though that have heard about the dangerous effects of apples on dogs would prevent the pet from eating these luscious fruits. Dogs are well loved pets thus it is only natural for pet parents to be concerned with foods that can harm the pet. Would you prevent the dog from eating apples or would you include the fruit in the dog's diet?

If I were you I would give the pet apples but - in moderation. Apple is perfectly safe for the dog as long as you do not allow the pet to eat the seeds. The amygdlin, a form of cyanide that is contained by apple seeds is highly toxic to dogs . This substance found in the seeds of apples has the dangerous effect of causing the abnormal functioning of the blood. Dogs that regularly consume apple seeds can suffer from damaged intestinal lining.

Diarrhea would occur if the pet is allowed to eat large amounts of apples. Apples contain naturally occurring sugar. Naturally occuring sugar is different from the processed sugar found in dogs treats. Natural sugar in apples can also cause obesity if the pet is allowed to stuff itself with the sweet fruit.

Dogs would get loads of healthful benefits from this crunchy sweet fruit but owners have to ensure that the apples are cored and that the dog would not be given free access to the fruit so that it would not overeat.

How you can Live with Puppies

By Walton Hong

Whether they live in a little flat in the city or a big ranch in the country, humans are drawn to dogs for pets, especially puppies. This is because they like the feel of raising a puppy into a dog and living life with them as a companion.

What some people do not think about, however, is where and how they live in terms of which puppy to bring home. Different kinds of housing lend themselves nicely to different puppy breeds, and understanding this is essential for both owner and pup.

Breeds for Apartments Apartment living may be complex because of a lack of space, pet deposits, and climbing stairs. For these reasons, smaller puppy breeds are much better for apartments. Smaller pups take up much less space, need smaller pet deposits, and are easier to walk down the block for bathroom breaks. Smaller puppies are also (generally) easier to train to be housebroken, and don't do well outdoors, making them ideal for apartment living. Types of apartment breeds include Chihuahuas, Pekinese's, little terriers, and pugs.

High Physical Exercise Pups People in both apartments and larger land locations can benefit from buying or adopting a high exercise breed of puppy, but both have to be dedicated. For the apartment goer, an already active way of life that could benefit from the companionship of a puppy (walking, running, hiking) are great, but not so fantastic for those who lead a much more sedentary way of life and can't commit the physical exercise time a puppy needs. Those who live in wider spaces, however, also have a responsibility; providing boundaries in the form of a fence for a puppy so physical exercise is guaranteed, but not at the cost of the pup's safety.

Roommates and Puppies Another classification altogether include those who live in any kind of housing, but with a roommate. This may or may not need a pet deposit, but the owner of the puppy should always be prepared to pay for any expenses and damages his pup causes with a roommate. You should always talk it over at length with your roommate, ensuring it is okay with him/her and making certain it's understood that feeding, washing, cleaning up after, walking, taking the pup to the vet - all are your responsibility. Living in a place with a puppy and a roommate can work as well as be pleasurable, but only as soon as these things have happened and an understanding has been reached.

Important Information Regarding the LitterMaid Self Cleaning Litter boxes

By Athena Hunter

If you're considering the purchase of a self-cleaning litter box, whether made by LitterMaid or another brand, you might be wondering if it's really a good value. There is a higher price associated with a self cleaning unit and some maintenance for the unit to function properly but you'll never have to clean another litter box. This article intends to review the Litter Maid and show you how they measure up

LitterMaid LME9000 Elite is a larger model self-cleaning litter box that this company makes for larger cats or households with multiple cats. It is important to get a litter box that is big enough for your cat to fit into. A smaller cat box can have issues, as most cats like to use it at the same time. The LitterMaid Elite is 28" by 20 by 8 1/2", so it gives your cats plenty of room, and the sensor will cause the unit to start cleaning a few minutes after a cat leaves the box. This self-cleaning heavy duty automatic litter box model has a ionic air cleaner, four carbon filters as well as four waster receptacles.

Regardless of the model of LitterMaid box you choose, you should also consider getting a cover for it. The company offers you a couple of options for covering their litter boxes. The LitterMaid Cat Privacy Tent fits all of their boxes and helps keep the litter inside the box while providing your cat some privacy.

If your cat is used to an ordinary litter box, it may take a little time for it to get used to the LitterMaid. There's nothing about LitterMaid that's difficult for a cat to use, but the simple fact is cats aren't too crazy about change of any kind. Try luring your cat to the new box by leaving the old one nearby and dirty. The cat is smart he will quickly decide the clean litter is the way to go. At first, the cleaning mechanism might disturb your cat, but since it's set up to not go off until a few minutes after the cat leaves the box, this isn't usually a problem.

Some that own the LitterMaid Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes have complained about the unit making noises when cleaning. Some people may think the sound is disturbing at times, but some are more sensitive to the noises than others. To help with the noise problem, some of the LitterMaid models come with a timer, so when the cat uses the box in the middle of the night it won't wake you. If you're wanting any kind of self-cleaning litter box, you probably won't find one that is silent.

As we've noted in this article, LitterMaid self-cleaning litter boxes can be a convenient way to avoid the daily hassles of scooping and cleaning that an old fashioned litter box represents. Like many high tech solutions, however, these models also have some glitches that users find annoying. Now that we have given you the above information, the choice is yours.

Yuck - Fido licked my Face Again

By Jerry Welsh

We know dogs to be very affectionate animals. No wonder dogs are dubbed as man's best friends because of the affectionate nature they show to humans. Dog are seen where ever the master goes and because they won't be separated from their masters they are also known as Velcro animals. Dogs are indeed well loved because humans would commonly hug and kiss dogs. Dogs also form close bond with the family thus the pet would bestow their own brand of kiss...licking the face of the master.

Is your pet a face licker too? Some owners would not mind being licked by the dog. Dogs are known to drink from the toilet bowl and has the habit of eating feces thus owners that are licked by the pet on the face will naturally be disgusted. Whether the owner is disgusted or not by the pet's habit it would still be necessary to understand why the dog likes licking faces.

The dog that is licking and washing your face with its saliva is simply showing you its affection. Licking is a natural behavior learned by dogs from their mother. The moment the puppies are born, the mother dog would start using its tongue to clean the afterbirth and also to stimulate circulation and help the puppies to breathe. The mother dog's habit of licking the puppies strengthens the bond between the dam and the puppies. Dogs are considered as family members and the pet consider the owners as its family. Licking the face is therefore done by the pet as a sign of affection and appreciation for the care given by the human family.

Dog behaviorists explain the habit of licking the face as a sign of the dog' submission or deference. Dogs live in a hierarchical order. Even in the wild, the dominant dog is respected and treated as the head of the pack. As a sign of submission dogs lower in rank would lick the face of the alpha male. Dogs lick the face of the human family as in the eyes of the dog they are the pack leaders.

A lot of dog owners consider the pet as their babies thus the saliva that covers the face when the dog licks is ignored. However, the licking can be an unsanitary habit given the dog's habit of raiding the trash and eating feces. Licking faces would be even more dangerous if the pet has turned its attention on children. Kids and dogs form a close bond and the kid will be seen hugging the dog and the dog will be seen licking the kid's face. However, this habit of the dog has to be stopped as the young ones can be exposed to the bacteria coming from the dog's mouth..
