Tips In Raising Rabbits For Meat - What You need to Be Aware Within this Business

By Gail Paterson

Rabbit farming for meat is a common business but it needs more dedication and attention compared to normal pet rabbit care. In this kind of business, the first thing that should be considered is the breed of rabbit to produce. The types which are commonly used in the business of raising rabbits for meat are the Californians and New Zealands because they are the fastest producing breeds.

Most owners have purebred stocks of these types while some crossbreed them to produce babies that grow more quickly and are more vigorous. The Californians, on the other hand, are highly demanded because of their plump yet fine-boned body structures. The New Zealand breed is one of the most popular among rabbit meat because they can already be sold in the market in just 8 weeks.

Keeping rabbits for meat is a business which is highly dependent on the quality of feeding that the producer does to his pets. Generally, rabbits are kinds of animals which consume different kinds of foods. Feeding these animals with lettuce or cabbage is not recommended because these vegetables can cause diarrhea problems. However, if a producer wants to get quality meat, only commercial pellets or alfalfa hay should be given to them. Giving the proper amount of the food is also important in raising rabbits for meat because overfeeding will cause too much accumulation of body fat. Once a doe becomes too fat, it may have some problems with kindling or breeding.

Knowing when to breed the parents is also important in raising rabbits for meat. Medium breeds are usually bred between 5-6 months while large breeds are not bred until they are 8 months. In choosing the animals to breed, make sure to choose those that are healthy and are not closely related. In mating the doe and the buck, the doe should be the one which should be placed in the cage of the buck because female rabbits are often territorial with their own cages.

The gestation period of these animals takes 31 days. Also make sure that the doe is already placed in a comfortable nest a few days before her actual giving birth. The actual birth of the young also happens in this time frame. Feeding the babies should not be a problem because the does naturally nurse their young. In cases when the mother has died though, the babies should be fed with a mixture made of skim milk, egg yolks, karo syrup, and bone meal.

Feeding Cattle in Winter and Summer Months - The 2 Most Essential Seasons

By Tim R Smith

Many farmers around the world have developed means and ways to make sure their livestock are meeting the necessary demand by finding the perfect feeds and methods of feeding cattle during the two most critical seasons of the year. Feeding cattle involves providing feeds that are both nutritious and rich in energy in order to achieve maximum production from beef cattle and milking cows.

In winter, cattle become more vulnerable to the cold temperatures, which is why feed intake is crucial. Cattle are fed mostly hay during the winter time, so best be stocked with more than enough hay. And since winter makes water freeze, there should be an abundant supply of melted ice water that should last for a good 24 hours. Along with hay, there should be enough water troughs and places for the cows to drink. Winter also makes feeding cattle a bit difficult because of the lack of grain feeds, which only grow during the warmer months of the year. Therefore, farmers can resort to artificially grown grain mixes which they can stock just before the winter season kicks in.

Summer is when farming cattle becomes more exhausting because there is a need to keep forages in their freshest state, and to make sure they contain as much fiber as the cows need in order to lactate or grow into good quality beef cattle. It is necessary, however, that the farmer knows how to regulate the intake of the cows, especially during this time of year when as said, feeds are abundant. At this time of the year, grains such as corn, cottonseed, legumes, and other feeds are abundant which is why there should be enough containers and feeding stalls so the cows will have more than enough space come feeding time.

Farmers need nutritious feed in order to sustain the beef and dairy cattle. Improved ways for feeding dairy cattle include timing the feedings with the lactation process where the early, middle to late, and inactive stages of lactation have different and corresponding feeding schedules. Feeding programs are often devised pertinent to the season and weather conditions, to facilitate the feeding in order to meet the world's food demand.

Moreover, farmers that work on feeding cattle during the summer months, especially now that there is global warming, must supply their cattle with feeds that contain more soluble protein and energy as they will most likely lose much of their energy because of the exertions or when lactating becomes harder as the heat of the weather drives on.
