The Magnificent Swedish Elkhound

By Jerry Welsh

Having existed in the 1000s, the Swedish Elkhound is indeed a very old breed. The companion dogs of the Stone Age people are speculated to be the ancestors of this breed. Jamtland, a province in the northwestern part of Sweden is the place of origin of this breed. During the later part of the last Ice Age, the Jamtland people have developed the Swedish Elkhound, a breed of dog with an outstanding stature. Thus, the dog also gained the name Jamthund.

The Swedish Elkhound is a spitz type breed with a wolf-like appearance. The rectangular shaped body is covered with smooth and close lying light to dark coat. Cream and gray marking on the dog's cheeks, muzzle, chest, belly and legs enhances the striking appearance of the thick double coat. The scimitar shaped tail that is tightly curled over the back enhances the dog's striking appearance

As implied by the name, a Swedish Elkhound was developed to be an elk hunter. Strong, courageous and energetic are apt descriptions for the Swedish Elkhound. A Swedish Elkhound was primarily bred to be a working dog. The breeding objective is to create not only a tall and big dog but one that is healthy as well . The dog has to adapt well to the rigors of hunting in heavily forested areas and to be able to scale rocky ledges and traverse deep snow in pursuit of prey. Indeed, the Swedish Elkhound, the breed that was developed is a remarkable hunter of elk, moose, lynx, bear and other game. This breed is also known as Jamthund which means bear hunter in the local dialect.

This is a versatile breed. The Swedish Elkhound is a dog that is first and foremost a hunter but the breed has adapted well to doing other duties. A Jamthund is also a herding dog, a utility dog, a guard dog and a sled dog . This brave and intelligent dog has become an army dog as well and was honored by being chosen as the national dog of the Swedish Marine. The Swedish Elkhound was designated as the official service canine of the Swedish Air Force.

In spite of the bold and aggressive nature shown when hunting, the dog has a stoic behavior. A Swedish Elkhound makes a wonderful companion dog as apart from an affectionate and friendly nature, this dog also has a stable and calm temperament. The affection for the whole family, the tolerance and the gentleness shown to the children are qualities that make a Swedish Elkhound breed an ideal family companion.

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs owners find it difficult to decide whether to have the dog neutered or not. Neutering is often the option of responsible dog owners that are aware of the tragic plight of stray dogs - of the animals considered as man's best friends that have to be put to sleep for being homeless. It is the owner's responsibility to make sure that the pet would not contribute to the population of stray dogs.

To neuter a dog, a small incision is made on the skin to remove the testicles to prevent it from reproducing. Would you believe that hte procedure aside from minimizing the number of homeless canines also promises to give it a longer, healthier and happier life. Healthier - because a neutered dog will not be open to the risk of testicle cancer. The hormone level of a castrated dog is controlled thus bad behavior that is associated with mood swings will be controlled as well. Castration decreases the male's inclination to roam thus the possibility of accidents that can snuff the life of the pet will be lessened.

However, owners have many reservations on the right time to neuter the dog . Neutering has many unfounded beliefs. Neutering done at an early age is believed to have a significant impact on the personality and physical growth of the pet.

Dogs are affectionate and playful by nature but if it is castrated before it has reached sexual maturity, the procedure will have a negative impact on the admirable qualities that make them such wonderful companions. Experts refute the veracity of these beliefs. The personality and the physical development of the dog will not be affected at all. So what is the right age to neuter the pet?

Except for newborn puppies, dogs can be neutered anytime. A pet owner would learn from the breeder the age of the dog but if the pet was obtained from a shelter considering the right age for neutering would not be possible. A dog is never too old for neutering but experts tell us that the ideal age will be before the dog reaches sexual maturity as long as the testicles has fully descended. A Shih Tzu or any other toy breeds can be neutered at six months as these breed gain sexual maturity early. Large breeds take longer to attain maturity thus German Shepherds, Great Danes and other large breeds can be neutered at about 1 year of age.

Red and Black German Shepherd Puppies: Is This the Puppy for You

By Chloe Gib

Red and black German Shepherd puppies grow into large, energetic dogs. If bored they become quite destructive. They require daily exercise, mental stimulation, and companionship. Before adopting a German Shepherd, make sure you have time for walks or runs, water play, and games like Frisbee and fetch.

Working dogs bred to herd and to guard sheep, today they're show dogs, family pets, military and police dogs, search and rescue canines. They're prized for their strength, intelligence, courage, and loyalty. Wary of strangers, they're gentle with children they know. Socialization and obedience training are a necessity to ensure their guarding instinct doesn't turn into aggression.

Proper nutrition is important for large dogs to develop strong bones. During the first 2 years they feed with 25% protein. Excess weight puts stress on developing bones. Any food a puppy doesn't eat in 20 minutes should be picked up. For six months feed 3 times a day, then reduce to 2 feedings a day.

Find a breeder you trust before visiting with any adorable must have puppies. Attend a show or contact a kennel club to get referrals. Obedience trainers, veterinarians, and groomers may also have referrals. Find a breeder who's knowledgeable about the breed and its health issues. Ask what tests have been done to find health problems, and what guarantee is provided. Most will take back any dog at any age if the owner can no longer care for their pet.

Visit with the parent dogs. They should be healthy and display a stable temperament. Check their registration papers. Meet and play with the litter. The breeder can help you pick a puppy with the best temperament for your family. Ask if the litter has been dewormed, and what shots they've had.

A good breeder will have socialized the pups with exposure to different sights, sounds, and people. Continue socialization and add obedience work to train your puppy in the way he should go. Make sure your puppy meets lots of people in different settings. Take him on car rides to new places with new sights, sounds, and smells.

Expect the breeder to ask you questions. They want to place their puppies in a forever home. Expect questions about your understanding of the breed, make-up of your household including other pets, living space available, plans for obedience training and exercise.

Red and black German shepherd puppies are produced in several different bloodlines bred for different purposes. Long hair on show dogs is acceptable in Europe. The American Kennel Club considers it a disqualifying fault. Many breeders in America disagree and purposely breed German Shepherd long coat puppies. Some have the traditional double coat. A "true" long hair lacks the undercoat for a smooth and silky look.

Reasons why a dog scoot

By Jerry Welsh

Dog owners would have been exposed to the weird behavior of the pet. It is not uncommon for pet owners to observe the pet turning around in circles, sleeping with the four legs up like an upended table and chasing the tail. Scooting is one of the bizarre behaviors of dogs. To scoot, a dog would propel its body forward using the front legs while dragging the butt against the floor, the carpet or the grass.

The family will certainly be entertained by the dog's comic act of cocking the head and turning around in circles. No matter how entertaining the dog is, the family would tire of watching the pet. An owner can't help but think that something must be wrong with the pet.

Scooting can be attributed to boredom. Dogs that don't get enough attention from the family will either be destructive or will do something to gain the family's attention. By dragging its butt the dog can get the attention of the family and would bask in the clapping and shouts of encouragement. The dog excited with the clapping and the laughter of the family will be enticed to do the act over and over again.

Dragging the butt though may not be for the benefit of the family. An itchy butt or an uncomfortable feeling may cause a dog to scoot. Due top the dog's propensity to ingest anything, strings, plastic or cloth that gets stuck in the rectum can give the dog an uncomfortable feeling. The hair on the anal area especially on long haired breeds can have clinging dried up feces. A dog will rub its rear end against the ground in an effort to remove foreign objects from its butt.

Worm infestation and anal gland disorders are possible reasons why the dog would drag its butt on the floor. A tapeworm infestation will make the dog scoot as the segments of worm on the anal are will cause severe itching. An impacted or abscessed anal gland is another reason why dogs would scoot. Anal gland secretions give the dog its distinct odor. Nature has designed the draining of the anal gland secretion to be done when the dog defecates however because of low quality food, dogs commonly have soft stools. Soft stools would result to impacted anal gland. A dog with an impacted anal gland will be weighed down with pain and discomfort thus it would scoot.

The Ultimate Dog Training Tips You Need To Know

By Stanley Smith

Dog training is beneficial for a household with a canine pet for several reasons. One, it's easier to have friends and family over without the dog barking or jumping. Also, they are less likely to destroy furniture. Read these tips on how to train your dog so you can live together peacefully.

Use your dog's "voice" to help you with the training process. A dog's bark or whine can tell you a lot about their mood and what they want. Paying attention and responding to their signals will help your pet be happier and more successful during training. You may also want to target excessive barking as part of your training program.

If your dog is sick or injured, don't punish it for doing something outside of it's control. If it vomits in the house, that would normally be considered a bad action, but in the case of sickness they may not be able to control it. Instead take your pet to the vet to see if or what is wrong.

If you want to train a well-behaved dog, you should never walk it with a tight leash. If you do this, then it will send an impulse to your dog to always pull. You do not want your dog to have this response. Therefore, you should always make sure its leash is at a comfortable level for it.

Be consistent in your role as pack leader with your dog. Without proper leadership from you, your dog will see this as an opportunity to establish themselves as the pack leader. Everything you do in respect to training your dog should follow this rule. Being the pack leader with your dog is a lifestyle change that will be rewarding for your pet.

If your dog does not respond well to you during training you should not get mad at him or her. You are the teacher and he or she is the student, so if they are not responding very well to you it could be the fact that you are not such a good teacher.

If you have an old dog, he may become grouchy and nervous. This is because older dogs often lose their vision, hearing, and/or sense of smell. This can cause them to feel uncertain and vulnerable. Be sure to keep things consistent for your old dog. Set up a comfortable area where he can always count on finding his comfy bed, favorite toy and a dish of food and water.

Whether you have a puppy or a dog that isn't well behaved, you can find ways to train your pet and make it easier to live with one. You can try training yourself, or enroll your dog in an obedience school. Remember the tips in this article if you've got a dog you need to train.

A Well-Trained Dog Is A Happy, Safe And Healthy Dog!

By David Hamilton

Do you want your dog to sit, stay, shake or stop using your expensive oriental rug to hide his little "gifts"? Read through this article to find tips that will help you accomplish those things you are having issues with. You may even teach him to clean up those accidents he did not mean to have.

When training your dog, you should never punish any good behavior that your dog displays. If your dog thinks that it has done something bad even when it has done something good, the dog will not repeat the good behavior. Sometimes, you may not even realize that you are punishing your dog. For example, if your dog goes outside to use the restroom, you should not leave it alone because it will think it did something bad.

Try to command dogs with one word or a small phrase rather than a lengthy phrase. Smaller commands are easier to remember and recognize from other people, whereas longer phrases can be confusing to a dog. Make sure everyone uses the same phrase to command a dog to avoid confusion.

Keep some of your dog's favorite treats with you when you are training him to obey a new command. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement. When you have his treat on hand, you can reward him as soon as he successfully obeys this new command. Before long, he will be able to respond to this command efficiently.

Timing is going to play a key role in the training of your dog. Set a schedule and keep to it. He should know when you are going to feed him, take him for walks and have play time. This is going to make it much easier for you to do all of the training that you have planned for him.

Remember that training your dog to do tricks should not only be fun for you, but fun for your dog as well. Don't force her to learn tricks if she is not having fun learning them. You will be able to tell if she is enjoying them by gauging her pleasure from your praise after she successfully completes a trick.

If you have a dog with separation anxiety, you can train him out of this anxiety by varying your routine. If you act like you're leaving the house, but then don't or store your jacket in the car instead of the closet, you can break the cycle of actions, that get the dog hyped up with anxiety to begin with.

The way you train your dog depends on your own goals and your pet's temperament, of course. Certain methods and strategies can be effectively applied with any training program. If you choose the methods presented in this article that suit your needs and your canine companion's attitude, you will be able to get your dog jumping through hoops - maybe literally - in no time.

Getting Rid Of Disease From Aquarium Heater Malfunction

By Boh Chang Min

Anyone who has a fish tank knows the inhabitants may contract diseases even with the best care. Sometimes when getting rid of disease from aquarium heater choice can make a difference. Quality heaters maintain water temperature at an optimum level for the inhabitants.

Temperature fluctuations can be deadly to fish when heaters stop working or malfunction in any way. If the temperature changes by as little as two degrees per day, fish will suffer from stress. The optimum temperature depends on the species with tropical fish requiring warmer water to survive. Problems occur when the water becomes too cold or too warm.

Consumers can choose from a variety of fish tank heaters to suit their own needs. Many tank owners use submersible style heaters. This style features an adjustable thermometer and effectively maintains tank temperatures. Basic models have a bimetallic strip but sophisticated models utilize microchip technology.

Affordable non-submersible heaters hang over the tank's edge. The portion of the unit holding the heating coils goes in the water. The control box remains out of the tank water for easy access. Sometimes installation requires making a hole in the tank hood.

Substrate heaters preserve the aesthetics of the tank because they are concealed by the substrate. These flexible heating cables are particularly effective in tanks with an abundance of plants. They are more expensive than the other two types listed above but are equally effective in freshwater or saltwater environments.

When getting rid of disease from aquarium heater elements should be inspected for defects. Temperature regulation within the range appropriate for the species plays a critical role in tank health. A faulty heater puts fish at risk of contracting diseases making it necessary for periodic inspection to ensure everything is working properly.

Non-Lethal Protection Versus Canine Assaults

By Creg C Butcher

Coming back home to my very own adoring pet every single night is one thing that I consistently look forward to. Also, my 2-year-old border collie seems thrilled to go on our daily evening run. The one thing which may spoil our pleasant evening excursion is some unwanted attention from the stray dogs which often find their way right into our area.

That matter got me looking at web shops in search of the most effective canine repellent for my own personal protection as well as my pet's. What I was trying to find was one that would be useful and also, at the same time, humane.

Dog spray works much the same way as the pepper spray which I bring: by delivering an immobilizing yet non-lethal mist which can take an opponent down. However, since the formulations of those two types of products are unique, my regular pepper spray just can't be used on dogs, nor is dog repellent recommended on humans.

An excellent dog pepper spray lowers the risk of irreversible harm to both sides. It takes effect fast in order to enable the user to leave danger and be clear of injury. On the flip side, it deals a non-fatal and short-term blow to the target animal simultaneously.

The Mace canine repellent that I ultimately made a decision to purchase offers safe and effective yet humane defense versus dog attacks. It possesses a convenient flip-top safety cover as well as a finger-grip dispenser that is not difficult to operate.

This kind of pepper spray for dogs came in a package which also included a belt clip as well as a key chain for portability and also accessibility. It has 17 grams of solution that may be dispensed in 10 one-second bursts.

In line with our personal standards, this particular canine repellant is fairly amazing. And as if that were not enough, it comes with an additional winning feature: long-range capability. It could spray inside a range of approximately 10 feet.

I do think that I have got my hands on a dependable along with effective dog repellant. Now, nothing can mess up my relaxing evening trip with my favorite pet dog.

What are the functions of dogs' whiskers

By Jerry Welsh

Most animals have whiskers. These widely spaced long hairs that are usually found around the muzzle, on the chin, on the upper lip and above the eyes of most animals are also called vibrissae. Dogs sport whiskers too in fact these are the first hairs grown by puppies. Whiskers are longer, thicker and larger hair so that even among the fur, whiskers will be very noticeable. Whiskers' roots are embedded about three times deeper as compared to ordinary hair. Unlike the ordinary hairs, whiskers are considered as live hairs because the network of nerves on the roots of these hairs make them ultra sensitive receptors.

Dogs are acclaimed for their ultra sensitive senses. The hearing and scenting abilities of these animals are legendary. Dogs would not go bumping in the night because unlike human eyes, the eyes of our four legged friends can see much better in the night. In spite of these outstanding abilities dogs receive yet another gift from nature that further enhance the senses - the whiskers. Whiskers are very sensitive to the touch and serves as radar or antennae.

The hair follicles that are set on a network of nerves make whiskers very sensitive receptors so that when the tips of the whiskers are brushed against objects, a message that will inform the dog of nearby objects will be transmitted to the brain. Whiskers are indispensable tools especially for dog breeds that follow prey in burrows. Dogs don't have shoulders and the body is a bit wedge shaped so that it would be easy to go in but going out would be difficult. The sensitive whiskers are longer than the rest of the dog's hair. Because these hairs are so sensitive, the dog will be informed if it is possible to enter or not.

Whiskers are also used as the dog's self preservation tools. Whiskers allows dogs to avoid their predators. Whiskers are so sensitive they can pick up the things that terrorize the dog's predators. Dogs will subconsciously use these fears to terrorize the predators.

Whiskers are very sensitive thus try not to rub these hairs against the hair growth when patting the pet as this will make the dog very uncomfortable. Whiskers are called bleeding hair as the dog would bleed if the whiskers are plucked.

Why is a dog's nose cold?

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are noted for their legendary scenting ability. Undoubtedly, the nose have played a very significant role in a dog's survival in the wild. The dog's scenting ability is behind the excellent survival skills of these animals. Thanks to the excellent scenting ability, dogs in the wild were able to survive by hunting and by avoiding their predators. Dogs are not only wonderful companions because due to the smelling ability dogs have become the dependable helpers and protectors of man . Present day dogs that are kept mainly as pets may not have much use for their scenting ability but the nose is still a valuable asset of dogs working for a living.

Aside from being home companions dogs are used in other capacities as well. The excellent scenting abilities are valuable assets of dogs utilized to herd and to detect bombs and narcotics. Dogs have been the wonderful companions of man but these animals have saved a lot of lives as rescue dogs as well. In recent years, the dog's nose is proven to have the ability to detect some types of cancer. A dog indeed is a cut above the rest not only because of its loyalty to mankind but also because of its excellent olfactory skills

A wet and cold nose is one of the distinct characteristics of dogs. Dogs are probably the only animals that have cold noses and an owner can't help but wonder if the cold nose is behind the dog's excellent scenting ability. The awesome olfactory capabilities of dogs is attributed to the moisture that makes the nose cold.

Dogs like humans, would have cold noses too when the weather is cold Dogs are very active and curious animals. Dogs are inclined to roam and when they do they would do a lot of sniffing along the way. It is not surprising for a dog to have cold noses because when they sniff the grasses and plants wet with dew, the moisture will that is sniffed will make the nose cold. Dogs have the propensity to lick as this is a normal canine behavior. Dogs will be seen licking the nose after a meal.

The moisture from the long tongue can be easily transferred to the nose. The cold nose aids in regulating the body temperature of dogs. Because of the limited number of pores, dogs do not have an efficient cooling system. Dogs don't sweat and to regulate body temperature, they have to loll the tongue to pant. The fluid that keeps the nose cold also helps in cooling the body.

Reasons why dogs have separation anxiety?

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs have certainly made a great difference to people's way of life. One of the reasons why dogs are considered as man's best friends is the legendary attachment these animals have for humans. The close bond pet owners have with their dogs is one of the joys of keeping these affectionate and loyal animals. Unlike cats, dogs become too dependent on their owners.

Because these animals form a strong bond with the human family they would not only expect to receive attention but would also demand to be with the master at all times. Because of this, dogs are dubbed as Velcro pets. The pet's strong bond with its owner is not always a good characteristics as it can cause separation anxiety, a condition that can make owners decide to abandon their pets. Separation anxiety causes dogs to be problematic pets because they turn destructive.

Barking, chewing, digging and house soiling comes with the territory of owning a dog. In dogs with separation anxiety disorder, the normal canine behaviors becomes destructive behaviors. When a normally well behaved dog manifests inappropriate behavior like excessive barking, chewing and digging when separated from its owner, it is highly likely that the dog is suffering from separation anxiety. Dogs with severe separation anxiety disorder not only manifest excessive and destructive canine behaviors but also mutilates its body because of panic attacks.

What are the reasons for a dog's separation anxiety disorder? Apart from receiving attention and affection from the family, a dog would also love to be with is human friends always because they are social creatures. Dogs can be the shadow of the master as these pets follow their masters around. Because of the close bond, dogs would want to be with the master always as when the master is not seen the dog would have panic attacks. Dogs are pack animals and they can consider the pet owner as the leader of the pack. Dogs, especially those with weak willed owners would think of themselves as the leader of the pack and consider humans as pack members lower in rank. On both cases, the dog would suffer from separation anxiety and manifest destructive behavior when separated from the master.

Abused and abandoned dogs commonly suffer from separation anxiety. Dogs that start to be destructive as soon as the master leaves home are suffering from separation anxiety disorder. At the sight of the master picking the car keys or taking the coat from the rack will trigger a panic attack and make the dog starts its destructive behavior.

Agile dogs noted to have vicious temperaments are pitted against animals several times bigger in size. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier from where Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier was developed is one of these fighting dog breeds. Having a fighting dog breed for an ancestor, the Irish Staff also known as Irish Staffie is believed to have the ferocious temperament of its ancestor. Does this mean that the dog would not be a suitable choice for a family companion?

An Irish Staff is a muscular dog that weighs from 55 to 77 lbs and measures about 24 inches at the withers. An impressive strength is one of the admirable qualities of this breed. Potential dog owners would think twice about getting this dog breed for a pet because of the intimidating appearance as well as its dog fighting ancestry. To mold this dog into a outstanding pet, it is necessary for a would-be owner to understand how the dog was developed.

Dogs that will be pitted with bulls and bears were developed from bulldogs and terriers during the early 19th century. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of the breeds of fighting dogs that were developed from bulldogs and terriers. After bull and bear baiting was banned in 1835, dog fighting became popular. Dog fighting enthusiasts developed the Staffordshire Bull Terrier into taller but leaner dogs. Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier was born.

The dog has started as a dog fighting breed but these dogs have adapted to the life of a household pet. An Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier would not be an ideal pet for a weak owner that will allow the dog to have its way. This dog is fearless, reckless, hard to housebreak, chews a great deal and has the propensity to jump from great heights.

However, the dog would be an ideal house pet that is tolerant and affectionate of the children if the owner knows how to control the pet. Socialization and obedience training is necessary to mold the dog into an ideal pet. This dog is ideal for an active family as without sufficient opportunities to exercise, the dog would become restless, destructive and hard to manage.

Train Your Dog To Be Happy While You Are At Work

By Cling Hillman

Any pet owner will agree that proper dog training techniques are critical to a happy, fun-filled home life. The best way to embark on the process is to thoroughly educate yourself about effective methods that have stood the test of time. By taking these tips to heart, you and your pet will be well on your way to a cooperative, symbiotic relationship.

Properly trained dogs can be taught to regard their crate as a place of safety. When possible always keep the crate in a central location so that the dog learns to understand that it is there and available all the time. He will begin to seek it out when he is tired and even when he is scared and seeking comfort.

Generally, dogs learn by association, relating actions with rewards. Be sure to keep distractions to a minimum when you begin the training, then change locations for the training over time as the dog becomes better at responding to your commands. Give your dog time - remember they are not human. You will be amazed at what they can be trained to do.

Train you small furry friend to get along with other dogs! Small dogs need socializing too! Many small dog owners forget that their dogs need exercise and social time just like large dogs. Small breed puppies should be socialized early, so they become comfortable with many sizes and temperaments of dogs. Furthermore, they should become comfortable with walking outdoors at an early age.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to be firm with orders and do not overuse your commands. This is important because if you over-saturate your commands, your dog will not be as responsive. Only give your dog orders when you are looking for a response.

Try to command dogs with one word or a small phrase rather than a lengthy phrase. Smaller commands are easier to remember and recognize from other people, whereas longer phrases can be confusing to a dog. Make sure everyone uses the same phrase to command a dog to avoid confusion.

The basics of training your dog involve rationing food and physically showing the dog what to do. By rationing the food your dog gets throughout the day, you can use treats during training more effectively. By physically moving the dog you can "force" the dog to understand what you intend the dog to do, in response to a certain command.

Plan training activities with your dog during a time when interruptions are minimized. Training goes much faster when both you and your pet can focus on the training activities without being distracted by other activities or disturbances. A focused 15 minute session is more effective than several sessions which are interrupted by distractions.

If you want to tackle dog training head on, the best way to go is through the best learning possible. Get the research that you need to learn the strategies that are highly effective even for professionals. You should begin with the tips in this article and get smarter about teaching your dog better.

Dog First Aid - Impalement

By Jerry Welsh

Bleeding wounds, various nicks and cuts, fractures...these are only some of the common injuries dogs have but impalement injuries is not really a common injury of dogs. Dogs though can sustain impalement injuries because these are very active and playful animals. Dogs get into different scrapes and sustain different kinds of injuries. Ingestion of poisonous substances, bloat or a blockage caused by the ingestion of a foreign object are injuries that would make a dog owner take a few minutes to recognize the true condition of the pet. An impalement injury will be easily noticed so that the dog owner will not wonder what accident happened to the pet.

An impalement injury can happen if the dog has fallen from heights and got impaled by a tree branch or speared by a fence. Dogs always got something in their mouth and a stick can get stuck in the dog's mouth. Dogs have the inclination to roam and one that has trespassed and destroyed other people's property can be meet a sad fate from the arrow of an irate person.

The impalement injury can be so serious to cause the death of the dog. Dogs are hardy animals and some minor impalement injuries would not really have serious effects on the pet. Professional medical attention will be necessary for serious and not so serious impalement injuries. A dog owner may think that a professional medical care is no longer necessary especially if the foreign object that has impaled the dog was not embedded too deep. An impalement injury that appears minor can have a more serious effect on the dog. A vital organ may have been affected by the object that has impaled the dog. Internal bleeding is another possible outcome of an impalement injury.

Professional medical attention must be given to the dog but before transporting the pet to a medical facility, first aid treatments must be administered to save the pet from a lot of pain.

Dogs in pain can turn aggressive and an impalement injury would certainly cause the dog immense pain. Use a muzzle to prevent the dog from snapping. The object that has speared the dog must not be removed. A dog owner's most important role is to calm the pet as unnecessary movements can jar the foreign object and cause more damage. Immobilizing the pet and the foreign object will prevent the pet's condition from getting worse . The impaled dog though can be removed from a stationary object like the steel bar on a fence. The removal of the object must be done gently and bleeding must be controlled while the pet is rushed to the hospital.

How to stop your neighbor's dog from barking

By Jerry Welsh

Barking is a natural behavior of dogs and guarding dogs and hounds are specifically trained to bark. An excessively barking dog would get on the nerves of people even those considered to be dog lovers. Among the not so pleasant behaviors of dogs, excessive barking is the one that concerns most dog owners. A dog owner may be tolerant of the noise made by the pet but other people would certainly go nuts. What can you do with the incessant barking of the neighbor's dog that drives you crazy?

Dealing with the maddening noise created by the neighbor's dog is not easy primarily because the dog is not yours. Shooting or hurting the dog is not an option unless you are prepared to be slapped with a legal suit. Something has to be done as you also have the right to have a decent night's sleep. Dealing with this concern is not unlike treading on glass as you naturally would not want to antagonize a person that will be your neighbor possibly for the rest of your life.

Talk to the neighbor about their noisy dog but be sure you are not in the attack mode. You can air your complaints but be sure to keep the neighbor as a friend and not an enemy. Talking in a high handed manner will antagonize and make the neighbor defensive. Take not of the date and time of your visit as well as times when the dog has become a nuisance. These notes will be important documents if you decide to file a legal case.

If you have the money to spend and you want to avoid an altercation with the neighbor, you can go hi-tech and solve the concern by using an ultra sonic devices. More often than not, dogs that bark excessively are kept outdoors. An ultra sonic barking device can be set up in your own yard and every time the dog barks it will send out a shrill piercing sound that can only be heard by dogs and not by people. The squealing sound would be irritating to the dog thus it would altogether stop barking

You still have another option if technology fails and if your neighbor ignored your complaint. Just as the neighbor has a legal right to own a dog, you also have a right to a good night's sleep and a peaceful surroundings. You can go to the police and explain the problem or you can pay the local animal control a visit.

How To Choose A Dog Training Expert

By Marion Peters

Dog training is an unregulated industry and unfortunately for many dog lovers out there anyone can advertise and claim that they are dog trainers and get a lot of money from you. The people who do this have not gone through any sort of training, licensing or certification of any kind. You need to perform a thorough background check of anyone you are considering to let train your pet so that it is well taken care of.

There are many individuals who consider being a trainer as a blanket cover for many professions that deal with dogs but this does not mean an individual knows anything about dog training or behavior. Even if the person happens to have a few dogs, that does not make them qualified to call themselves trainers. Picking the right person to train your dog will make all the difference in the world.

There are people who have veterinary specialist training and others who have other forms of certificates in to train dogs but the rest are just amateurs who are not fit to take care of peoples pets. With there being no regulations in place, people have taken advantage of this. However there are people who are qualified out there.

The first option you have is to find someone who is a certified pet dog trainer (CPDT). To be awarded with this certificate the person needs to have passed an examination and surpassed certain minimum requirements. The examination incorporates instructors skills, theory studies, husbandry and the proper use of the practice tools. The CPDT is also a continuing program with individuals required to sit for the exam every five years.

Search for people who have the certified applied animal behaviorist or CAAB qualifications. These people usually undergo extensive education, certain ethics and are required to meet a minimum cut off of experience in dealing with dogs. This will ensure that you are leaving your pet in capable hands.

You may also want to seek the services of a qualified veterinary specialist to train your dog. The specialists go through approved residency practice and other training on animal behavior for their skills. For the dog to be properly trained you need someone who understands the animals behavior and how to deal with it.

In your search you may have spotted many advertisements that claim to offer dog training services but some of them may have been put up by people who have no clue. There are those that are bold enough to say they have been trained yet they have not. You can confirm all these allegations on the net.

What should you do if you hit a dog with your car

By Jerry Welsh

Dog owners should be responsible enough not to let their pets wander as being curious animals that are predisposed to chasing motorists, the pet can be hit by a car. What would you do if you hit a dog with your car? Would you pull over and stop or would drive on thinking that it is JUST a dog anyway? Stopping would mean assuming the veterinary bills for the treatment of the injured dog.

Because of the loving and loyal nature, dogs are considered by owners as members of the family. Think how the loving owners will react if the dog died. The dog may be a car chaser or a stray and the accident was really not your fault but not stopping to help the dog can result to one dog lost to dog heaven. The injured dog could have survived if you only cared to stop and help.

No one would want to injure and be the cause of death of animals. Conscience and law dictates that you have to stop if you hit someone's pet with your car. Driving on can get you slapped with a cruelty to animals charge. Pull over and carefully move the dog to the side of the road so as not to create road hazard to other motorists and more importantly to prevent the already injured dog from being run over by oncoming cars.

Dogs that are in pain or in shock can turn aggressive and bite. Prevent the dog from snapping by muzzling the dog with a scarf, a tie or a belt or by covering the head with a blanket or a jacket. If the dog is small it can be easily lifted to the side of the road. Moving large dogs would be easier if a blanket or a jacket will be used as a stretcher.

Possible injuries to the dog would range from minor bruises, broken bones to internal injuries that can result to the death of the dog. Dogs that have minor bruises can have serious internal injuries that would need immediate treatment. Call 911. The authorities will come out to help. The owners of the dog must be notified thus it would be necessary to examine the dog for any identification tags. Pet owners should not allow their dogs to wander but as you have injured the dog it will still be your responsibility to pay for the medical bills.

What to do if the dog is limping

By Jerry Welsh

What can you do to ease the pain that makes a dog limp? Limping is an indication that the dog is in pain. A dog owner has to know what makes the dog limp to be able to find ways to help the pet. Dogs are naturally energetic and some breeds are noted to have high exercise requirements. Dog owners know that their pets have to be provided with opportunities to exercise lest unwanted behaviors are developed due to the dog's inactivity. A limping dog though cannot meet its exercise requirement because of impaired mobility?

The dog's impaired mobility can be caused by several factors. Nothing much can be done if the limp is caused by a broken bone as this case would naturally need a vet's knowhow. A dog owner can determine what makes the dog limp by examining the pet thoroughly. Simple cases that makes a dog limp like cuts on the foot pad, a thorn or a cut on the foot or even a small rock between the toes can be easily treated at home. To ease the dog's discomfort you simply need to remove the thorn, clean the wound with warm water and apply antibiotic ointment. Our four legged friends are tough and as soon as the wound is healed, the dog would be its usual energetic self.

Because dogs are very energetic, soft tissue trauma or what is commonly known as pulled muscles and sprains are common. Sprains or soft tissue trauma does not really need a vet consult as the condition can be righted simply by letting the dog rest. This kind of treatment though would be rather difficult to carry out given the inherent energies of dogs. To prevent the dog from using the injured foot, it would be best confine the pet in a crate.

The age of the dog may have something to do with the impaired mobility. The deterioration of joints and ligaments are the most common cause of limping in older dogs . Abnormality of hip and leg bones, arthritis and hip dysplasia are some of the most common conditions that make a dog limp.

Limping that is caused by these conditions would need immediate medical attention. X-rays and a thorough medical examination will be necessary to give proper diagnosis. Pain medications are normally prescribed to lessen the pain and the discomfort of the dog.

List of Common Foods Toxic to Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

If you regularly bring your dog to the vet's it is highly probable that the vet had advised you on the kind of food that you should give your pet. You may have received from the vet a list of the human foods that must not be given to dogs. If you understood the dangers of these human food, you would not be swayed by the whining of the dog begging to have of bite of your food. Because of the bond children have with the pet, it would be very hard to stop them from giving unsafe foods. The grapes or the chocolate being eaten by the child will be shared with the pet.

The list would have coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages as unsafe for the pet. These are unsafe beverages for dogs because the caffeine in coffee and tea has the effect of stimulating the cardiac and central nervous system of the dog. The same with humans dogs that have ingested alcohol will be intoxicated. Consuming large amounts of coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages can result to the death of the dog.

Chocolates and candies are favorite comfort foods especially by people with sweet tooth. Too much consumption of chocolate can result to obesity but consumed in moderation this sweet was found to be good for the heart. Sugar free candies and chocolates can poison dogs. The stimulant Theobromine in chocolates causes stimulation of the dog's cardiac and nervous systems. Sugar-free candies must not be given to dogs because Xylitol, the artificial sweetener causes a drastic drop in the dog's blood sugar so that a small amount ingested can result to the death of the dog.

Raw eggs and raw fish are listed as foods toxic to dogs. Raw eggs have avidin, the enzyme that prevents biotin or vitamin A from being absorbed by the body so that dogs would have poor coat quality. Salmonella in raw eggs will affect dogs too. Dogs that are regularly fed raw fish would develop thiamine deficiency that would cause the dog to have poor appetite, to have seizure and in severe cases to die.

Sharing with the pet whatever food is being eaten is a common habit of dog owners. This habit is more commonly seen in children as they usually form a close bond with the pet. Parens have to carefully explain to the kids the consequences of feeding the pet food considered to be poisonous to dogs. Given the close ties humans have with dogs, it would be very hard to remember that some foods safe for human consumption are poisonous to dogs thus a list of these toxic foods posted in a prominent place would serve as reminder to all the family members.

Health benefits of Broccoli to Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

People know about the healthful benefits that can be gained from eating vegetables. Dog owners wanting to ensure optimum health of the pet would include vegetables in the dogs diet. Dogs will surely relish the taste of vegetables as dogs are happy eaters. Vegetables would enhance the taste of the dog's dry foods. Aside from this fact, vegetables would provide the pet with essential nutrients that are not contained by commercially prepared pet foods.

Broccoli is listed as one of the human foods unsafe for dogs. Broccoli has isothiocyanate, a powerful gastric irritant. The toxicity of this vegetable is dose dependent. Broccoli will be safe for the dog as long as the dog owner makes sure that the amount of this veggie ingested by the pet is not more than 10% of its daily food intake. Stomach upset that will cause the dog severe pain will occur if broccoli is more than 10% of the dog's diet. Isothiocyanate's effects become fatal if the amount of broccoli ingested by the dog is more than 25% of the daily food intake.

Broccoli is a very nutritious vegetables. Broccoli is a good source of vitamins A and C. Vitamin C promotes the absorption of protein thus dogs that consume this vegetable can fully get the protein from their foods. Broccoli has high levels of calcium and folic acid. Dogs will always be exposed to potentially harmful substances from the food and also from the environment. Broccoli has high levels of antioxidants that help repair the damage done by toxic substances to the dogs cells.

Broccoli contains sulforaphane, the substance that helps in the detoxification process. Broccoli has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying components that eliminates free radicals in the dog's body thereby lowering the risk of development of cancer and other health concerns. The phytochemicals found in broccoli is a powerful cancer cell fighter thus the risk of cancer development in the dog is reduced. The inclusion of broccoli in the dog's diet promotes bladder and intestinal health of the dog because this veggie is a good source of soluble fiber.

Dogs are voracious eaters and because these are well loved pets, owners would find it hard to resist when the dog pleads for second helping. The owner can give the pet all the vegetables it can consume without fearing that the pet will get obese. The dog owner has to be careful in feeding the dog broccoli lest it causes the dog more harm than good.

Tools and Supplies That Will Make Dog Grooming Easy

By Jerry Welsh

A pet dog is often treated as a part of the family. It is therefore not surprising if dogs will be provided with all their needs and more. Dogs being considered as the baby of the family will be provided with toys. Dogs are dressed in trendy dog clothes and accessories. Because of the affection for the pet it will be allowed to share the bed and to use things of the owner. Dogs indeed are much loved pets but would it be wise to make the dog use the grooming supplies and tools of the owner?

To keep the dog happy and healthy, it has to be regularly groomed. A dog has to be groomed regularly to attain an impressive appearance but the grooming routine also allows the pet owner to see if a health concern is starting to develop in the dog's body. Any parasite can be eradicated at once before the infestation spreads. Depending on how the pet was trained, the grooming session can be happy and hilarious moments or a challenging task that would daunt the most determined dog owner

Grooming the dog would be a lot more easier if the owner has the right tools and supplies. Coat brushing is an important part of grooming. The owner's brushes and combs must never be used on the dog even if the pet is very clean and parasite free. To make the grooming routine easier and less time consuming, the right tools must be chosen thus the dog owner can get a wire pin brush, a soft bristled brush or a slicker brush.

The dog's hair may need trimming or stripping thus it would be necessary to have a blunt tipped scissors or a stripping knife. Other grooming tools are nail clippers to keep the dog's nails trimmed and hemostat which is necessary in removing excess hair from the dog's ears.

Dogs must have their own grooming supplies as human supplies can have dangerous effects to the dog. Shampoos, conditioner, soaps and other grooming supplies that are formulated for humans must not be used in dogs as they may not be tolerated by the sensitive skin of the dog. Human toothpaste must not be used on the dog too. Instead of being spitted out, the toothpaste will be swallowed. Some ingredients in human toothpaste would be harmful to dogs.

Grooming tools and supplies for the pet can be found on any pet supply store thus there is no excuse to use human tools and supplies to groom the pet.

Positive Side of the Electric dog fence

By Colin Seal

The dog is usually considered to be the guardian of homes against thieves and trespassers but there are times that it also needs to be protected against other humans and animals. Thanks to technology, you can rely on the electric dog fence to prevent your dog from getting lost or running away from home.

Different types of dog fences are available now in the market. By purchasing these systems, you can offer a containment system and keep them in the yard. In actual fact it is your decision to fix on what structure will match the breed, size and personality of your pet. Nonetheless due to technology, you will probably opt for the fence that will be most effective. The electric dog fence is employed generally so that you can observe the features rigorously.

Electrical Fences

The elements of the electric dog fence are comprised of the concealed wire, transmitter and receiver. With this mechanism, you want to bury the electrical wire is positioned round the perimeter of your home. The receiver is attached to the dog's collar while the concealed wire will discharge a radio frequency which causes the collar to alert the animal if it is going near the boundary. When your pet gets too near or makes an attempt to cross over, it may be given a slight static pulse. The jolt isn't dangerous but it will deter the dog from going across the border.

Intensive training is needed to prep your dog in respecting the bounds that you have set up. It may take a minimum of 2 weeks to teach your dog in finding the system of the electric dog fence. This needs to be done regularly by bringing your dog to the yard and if it tries to go over the border, it gets the warning. Once your pet gets used to this routine, you can expect it to respect the limits and stay at the chosen dog section.

Advantage of the Electric dog fence

The electric dog fence doesn't hide or make your grass ugly matched against the standard fencing structures. The invisible fence is a very good idea when you own a dog that's very frolicsome because it does not have anything to barking at, dig around or gnaw. It's now a typical containment system which is reasonable and extremely functional. You don't have to stress about the animal damaging anything. However, be sure to inquire from the provider about the functions of this mechanism before purchasing a unit.
