A Well-Trained Dog Is A Happy, Safe And Healthy Dog!

By David Hamilton

Do you want your dog to sit, stay, shake or stop using your expensive oriental rug to hide his little "gifts"? Read through this article to find tips that will help you accomplish those things you are having issues with. You may even teach him to clean up those accidents he did not mean to have.

When training your dog, you should never punish any good behavior that your dog displays. If your dog thinks that it has done something bad even when it has done something good, the dog will not repeat the good behavior. Sometimes, you may not even realize that you are punishing your dog. For example, if your dog goes outside to use the restroom, you should not leave it alone because it will think it did something bad.

Try to command dogs with one word or a small phrase rather than a lengthy phrase. Smaller commands are easier to remember and recognize from other people, whereas longer phrases can be confusing to a dog. Make sure everyone uses the same phrase to command a dog to avoid confusion.

Keep some of your dog's favorite treats with you when you are training him to obey a new command. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement. When you have his treat on hand, you can reward him as soon as he successfully obeys this new command. Before long, he will be able to respond to this command efficiently.

Timing is going to play a key role in the training of your dog. Set a schedule and keep to it. He should know when you are going to feed him, take him for walks and have play time. This is going to make it much easier for you to do all of the training that you have planned for him.

Remember that training your dog to do tricks should not only be fun for you, but fun for your dog as well. Don't force her to learn tricks if she is not having fun learning them. You will be able to tell if she is enjoying them by gauging her pleasure from your praise after she successfully completes a trick.

If you have a dog with separation anxiety, you can train him out of this anxiety by varying your routine. If you act like you're leaving the house, but then don't or store your jacket in the car instead of the closet, you can break the cycle of actions, that get the dog hyped up with anxiety to begin with.

The way you train your dog depends on your own goals and your pet's temperament, of course. Certain methods and strategies can be effectively applied with any training program. If you choose the methods presented in this article that suit your needs and your canine companion's attitude, you will be able to get your dog jumping through hoops - maybe literally - in no time.
