How To Find Reputable Dog Breeders

By Gloria Gardner

It's a fact that dog breeders in New England love their dogs. They strive to maintain and improve the breed. With knowledge of genetics, parentage is planned to produce healthy puppies with predictable traits and temperaments. They work diligently to produce quality dogs and to place them in quality homes.

Research breeds before shopping. The advantage of buying a purebred is that it comes with known characteristics, high energy or calm, alert or docile. Talk to the breeder before you see the irresistible little fur balls. Discuss your families make-up, habits, energy level, and space limitations.

Responsible breeders sell registered pets of known parentage who have been screened for health defects. Ask if they take back a puppy that develops a health defect. Most will take back any puppy or older dog that the owner can no longer care for, for any reason.

Purebreds are not unhealthy. Dogs from backyards and puppy mills are often unhealthy. Lineage is unknown. There's no screening for health issues. Inbreeding is common. Registries record bloodlines making it possible to predict the health, temperament, and characteristics to be produced in a litter.

Responsible breeders produce quality, not quantity. Visit and interact with the parents as well as the puppies. Multiple litters and litters of multiple breeds indicate a puppy mill without time for socializing the puppies. Choose a breeder that treats their dogs as household pets.

Pet quality dogs make perfect pets. They're not unhealthy, just too big, too small, wrong coat length, or incorrect markings for a show dog. Sometimes adult dogs are returned because the owners living situation changed. They may be stellar pets well trained with good manners.

Your local kennel club can provide breed resources. Veterinarians, groomers, and obedience trainers may also have valuable information. Attend a dog show to see many breeds and meet local dog breeders in new england. Ask questions. Your goal should be to bring home the right pet for your family.
