The Worry caused by Fleas

By Felicia Moon

Has the population of fleas around the UK increased? Those with pets in Britain are finding fleas a problem. Animal keepers have realized a fluctuation in the number of insect infestation of their animals especially pets. Many of them are attributing the fluctuation to some hybrid-type of fleas that is not responding to normal treatment.

Professionals have linked the concern to the mild winters and warm, wet summers. Animal keepers and pet owners have increasingly opted to shop online hence cases of inappropriate treatments of animals infested with fleas. Regardless, the experts still insist that the problem is because of the weather pattern. The pattern includes damp summers and mild winters. The houses are also constructed to provide an all year round warm and humid condition. Such conditions are conducive for the multiplication and survival of fleas.

The experts say it is important that owners of pets act from proper advice before purchase. The owners should also weigh their pets to ensure they dose them correctly. Information from the internet may not be comprehensive enough for this purpose. In addition, infested areas have to undergo regular checks and re-treatments to reduce the risk of fleas' recurrence. Some fleas in unoccupied areas can have yearlong life cycles that allow them to re-infest the area.

At some point in the life of a pet, it might be infested. Flea infestation is a common phenomenon that should not cause panic to pet owners. It happens everywhere and can be controlled.

Actually, no one likes fleas but it is important to accept their existence if you have a pet. They bite the skin and suck blood as food. Pets do not like the bites which might result in disease. Fleas act as hosts to tapeworms, which they can easily transfer to your pet.

Even the cleanest homes have a flea infestation as a problem, as pets transfer the fleas amongst themselves whenever they meet other animals. A pet that has fleas can be easily identified from the signs. Most of the time, when your pet is infested, it itches and crawls all the time. Fleas hide on the pet's skin, at home on the furniture and carpets.

A pet that scratches and bites itself every time may have fleas. Take time and look for flea droppings which can be black or brown particles. This is in the fur, the whole tail, on the neck, under the armpits and behind the ears. If you suspect your pet, ensure you are standing on a dampened white surface and then brush its skin. The granules will fall on the surface in case your pet is infested. This will confirm to you that you need to start treating your pet.

For you to keep free of fleas for both you and your pet, then you can just follow a flea control program. The program uses tablets to kill fleas and worms at the same time. Your pet will be free of tapeworms and fleas.
