Six Things To Ask A Breeder With English Springer Spaniel Puppies For Sale

By Bernadette Martin

Few things are as adorable as eight week old springer spaniel puppies. In fact, most people find it hard to say no to that spunky bundle of energy. It may be hard to resist temptation, in fact your initial instinct may be to walk away with the first puppy you hold. Well, for those searching for English springer spaniel puppies for sale, here are six things to ask a breeder before you make a decision.

The reason for this is simple. Good breeders raise good puppies. By paying attention to confirmation, temperament, and genetics reputable kennels can provide you with a healthy dog that will be free of problems as it grows. The following are key points to consider when selecting a new member of the family.

Each breed has conformation standards that are set by the American Kennel Club. With Springer Spaniels this is broken down into two categories: show and pet quality, and working dogs referred to as field spaniels. The first does well in the city with proper exercise, while the hunting version tends to have higher energy levels and does best when it has a job to do.

Once you decide upon the qualities you desire in your future companion, select kennels that breed stock that displays those traits. Pin point the activities you plan on using your spaniel for, be it obedience, hunting, show, or tracking. Temperaments will vary depending on the characteristics each breeder focuses on. After discovering potential kennels, ask the owner if there are any health issues that may be inherited from the parents. Reputable breeders will be open with this information.

You should be able to see the parents. This will give you an idea of what to expect from the puppy as it matures. Plus, this way you can observe what personality traits and physical characteristics the parents are passing on to their offspring. Be cautious of breeders who make excuses or are reluctant to reveal the parents. This could be a sign of a puppy mill, or irresponsible breeder who is more likely to breed dogs that do not meet breed standards.

Steer clear of kennels that breed for profit instead of quality. This is done by asking how often the females are bred, and at what age this happens. Responsible outfits do not allow their dogs to reproduce until two or three years of age. The reason for this is to prevent any health issues or undesirable traits to be passed on to the offspring. A dogs temperament does not set until the age of three, and some health conditions only become present as the animal matures. An example of this is hip dysplasia. Some breeders take the extra step of checking their stocks hips and elbows via x-ray to check for dysplasia and other conditions.

Before walking away with a cute bundle of fluff in your arms, spend time observing all the litter mates. Watching them will give you insight into their personality. Pick a pup that matches your lifestyle. Sometimes breeders will help match new owners to the ideal puppy. It helps to have a mental list of what you desire.

Spend some time deciding what type of pet you would prefer, whether you need a high energy jogging companion, or a buddy who likes to chase sticks in the park. Next, research breeders by following the recommendations mentioned above. By following these simple suggestions, you will be well on your way to discovering the springer spaniel of your dreams.
