Rules Related To Ownership And Breeding Exotic Cats

By Anthony Davis

When looking to acquire a personal or family pet, there are a number of choices. While this is the case, there are some animals, especially those living in the wild which are illegal to breed or own. As such, before Breeding Exotic Cats, it is important to know the laws as applied to the area in which the pet will reside.

As with cute kittens and puppies, there are some things to know before acquiring any wild animal as a pet. First, it is important to realize that while considered wild, not all pose the same threats as would a cheetah, leopard or lion. In fact, there are a number of smaller cat breeds which most people have no idea exist.

Lions, Tigers, Cheetahs and Leopards are often the highlight when it comes to a trip to a big cat sanctuary, zoo or when viewing a documentary. In most cases, many of these cats are still found in the wild. Whereas, these smaller breeds are often in need of responsible pet owners and private homes due to the threats of larger breeds and other animals in the wild.

Most of these cats are not considered endangered species. While this is the case, owning one of these wild cats is different than owning a domesticated house pet. In fact, some owners find owning a wild animal far more challenging than a domesticated cat, dog or other animal.

One difference between owning a wild animal and a domesticated one is like comparing a basketball player to a swimmer. Although, for more adventurous pet owners which have the capability to care for such an animal, these owners can often provide a safe and secure home for wild cats and other exotic animals.

These rules and regulations specific to each State in the United States are to protect both animals and owners from harm. Whereas, there are also some general rules regarding owning exotic animals. For, unless a prospective owner knows these rules and regulations, there can often be a great number of surprises once getting the animal home.

The first is to understand that these type cats are going to mark territory by spraying different areas which can include furniture, floors and walls, whether male or female. In most cases, there will be a need to acquire an over-sized outdoor crate or provide a room dedicated to the animal. Whereas, if needing medical attention, specialized care is often necessary from a Veterinarian who has special training in exotic and large breed animals.

One of the most common considerations which can often be overlooked when acquiring any type of pet is that doing so limits travel. While domesticated animals can be placed in pet kennels, pet hotels and some hotels, these exotics are not normally allowed at such locations. As such, private pet sitters are often required whether traveling for business or pleasure.

As with any pet, it is important to understand that acquiring one is a long-term commitment. For, while most domesticated animals can have difficulties being adopted, it is even more difficult to re-home an exotic one. As such, if there is any chance that the individual can not keep the animal on a long term basis, it is best to allow someone else the opportunity who can do so.
