The West African Dwarf goat breed as the name suggests has its origin in Central and coastal West Africa. It is the ancestor of Nigerian breeds of goats in the US, African pygmy goats, and the Dutch pygmy and dwarf goats in the Great Britain. The evolution of the breed is thought to have been triggered by the humid conditions that existed in the forests of Central and West Africa. Here is information on Nigerian dwarf goats for sale in Southern California.

The stature of these animals is miniature, which leads to them being very suitable to be kept as pets by most individuals. There are various similarities between the Pygmy goat and Nigerian dwarf goat. However, there are specific differences that distinguish them. For example, the breeding of Nigerian dwarfs is intended to make them similar to their larger dairy goats with a nice body length and structure. On the contrary, the raising of pygmies is intended to make them cobby and heavy boned.

For first time goat owners, the activity may initially appear intimidating. As time goes by, however, individuals get accustomed to it, hence easing things. There are some crucial factors that those who would like to rear a flock need to know. One the factors to know is that it is possible to teach goats to behave in a certain way.

Since these animals are not as intelligent as some pets such as dogs, they cannot be trained to do everything that a dog is capable of doing. Besides, training an entire flock can be such a hard task. As such, training of goats is kept to a few basic commands such as responding to a whistle or some other sound. For instance, one can train the animals to move or stay stationary when a whistle is blown.

Furthermore, sheep are much calmer than a goat. When a goat want something, it can become really stubborn. This usually makes it a bad thought to have collars around the necks of these animals. Safety risks are posed to these animals when collars are put around their necks. This is because the fence or any other object may entangle with the collar as the animal moves and cause accidents.

It is critical to make sure the animals are provided a warm and clean space where they spend the night. This can be done by putting providing a bedding for them to sleep on. Bedding can be made using organic matter like leaves. Daily cleaning is important to prevent droppings from accumulating. If droppings are allowed to accumulate, they often lead to diseases.

Dwarfs goats are easy to maintain because they have a small size. That means that they do not consume a lot of food like other bigger breeds do. It is this ease of maintenance that makes these creatures very preferable as pets. However, besides being kept as pets, they are also kept for milk products.

In spite of their small bodies, a lot of milk is produced by these animals. Actually, they are considered to be the best species of dairy breeds in the category of dwarf goats. Therefore, they are increasingly being acquired by more people.
