Ways To Treat Separation Anxiety For Dogs

By Christopher McDonald

Animals experience emotions, just like humans. They are also aware of their surroundings and are sensitive enough to feel that something is not right. Thus, when there are times when they can sense that their masters are not around for them, they get upset and worried. Their worries can be manifested in disobedience or ruining household items. However, Los Angeles dog owners are also busy that they cannot properly tend to their pets. Fortunately, there are methods in treating separation anxiety for dogs in Los Angeles.

Just like any other human condition, this can also be found in dogs. It can be shown in destructive and frantic mannerisms. Also, it may stem from separation from pet parents. This should not be seen as disobedience, rather a condition that needs to be treated properly, so your pet can return to his or her calm and happy self.

Firstly, do not make it too obvious for them if you are heading out. Or, your going away movements must be altered. For example, when you head out the door, you can give them a treat or their favorite toy. The main objective is not to trigger their anxiety at the sight of their owner going away. You can also opt to go out using the backdoor, so they will not know that you had already left.

Next, control your emotions around them. Be neutral in approaching to say hello and leaving to say goodbye. When paid too much attention, they will miss it and get used to it, that the next time you leave, they do not know what to do. If not given what they are used to, it might prompt the feeling of being anxious.

Thirdly, take the time to make your furry friend their personal space. Do not let them sleep on your bed anymore and train them to rest on their own. Again, if you make them get used to them sleeping beside you, they might become upset if you are not around. This teaches them independence and will prevent feelings of anxiousness.

Before you leave, let them succumb to their favorite toys and treats every once in a while. Play their favorite songs. Ensure their comfort and light atmosphere in order to get distracted away from the thought of being alone. Also, stressors must be prevented. Anything that could prompt anxiousness such as chains or ropes must be kept away from them.

The fifth tip is that you should also not be away for a long period of time. If the situation calls for it, call a babysitter or dog walker that could take care of your pet for you. They should be fed, have someone to play with, and even walked outside. This keeps them away from thinking that you are not with them.

If the anxiety is too hard to treat on your own, bring them to a veterinarian to know what to do and to be treated properly. They can be provided the proper medicine and be well attended to. This is also to prevent further problems because if they have no idea know how to cope up with this, they might bring this up on other things around the home and destroy them.

All in all, conditions and illnesses should be given proper attention and treatment. Our pets should be provided care. But most importantly, we must be aware in teaching them become independent. The best way to cure anxiousness is to let them know that being alone can be a good thing.
