By Jennie Gross

Fleas can become a problem with any pet but they can be controlled with natural pet products. When a pets comfort is affected by the fleas that is when it is time to step in and help. There are any number of products available to correct the problem but many have synthetic and potentially toxic substances.

Removing the fleas can be quite difficult. If they are a problem for your pet then they are most likely in many other areas of your home. A single adult flea has a 90 day life span. In their lifetime they are able to lay 400 eggs. Each of those eggs laid can reproduce the same number. In six months time it is easy to see how both pet and home can become infested.

The areas where they sleep and play will require additional attention because the population will be stronger there. Although concentration must be placed on those areas, the rest of the home has to be treated. This includes all upholstery, drapes, carpets and all cracks and crevices.

Before treatment begins both pet and home need a thorough cleaning. All the above mentioned areas will need vacuuming. Use any attachments necessary to get to the cracks. With this all possible stages a flea may be in are collected in the vacuum. When done it must be emptied immediately and put outside the home.

Your pet needs to be cleaned as well. Use a flea comb to remove the fleas. The pet will need a bath regularly. Either a natural flea shampoo or regular natural shampoo may be used for the bath. The will both remove fleas. Follow the bath with a lotion or powder if necessary.

There are several natural products for removing pests from pets. These include essential oils, pyrethrum, d-limonene and diatomaceous earth. The one considered safest among them is the diatomaceous earth. It can be placed directly on your pet. It is a fine powder and can be used all over the house with no harm to human or pet. The powder is able to penetrate the flea exoskeleton and cause their death through dehydration.

The best defense against fleas is a strong, healthy pet. This is achieved by feeding them a healthy, whole food diet. It should be full of the necessary vitamins and supplements. Garlic, thiamine and zinc help fight fleas from the inside out. The odor they emit repels fleas. These items can be found where natural pet products are sold.
