New Ferret Owners Should Check This Out

By David Murtik

If you have been considering adding a pet ferret to your family, be sure that you are prepared before you actually bring one home. Do your research and make sure that you are fully aware of what you will need to do when your furry friend arrives in your house. These pets can be wonderful, but they can also take up some time. Make sure that you are OK with that and never buy a ferret on an impulse.

People who have owned ferrets for years probably are not too surprised to see that people are falling in love with these furry little creatures. They realize however, that there is a need for some education before people start buying up ferrets just because they are adorable. These animals make wonderful pets, but they do present some challenges.

When you decide to bring a ferret into your home, you must be sure that you are prepared. The most important thing to get is a good quality ferret cage. Some people may try to cut corners on this accessory, but that really is not a good idea. A better quality cage will be a much more secure environment for these curious little creatures.

Although it is cute to dress up your pet ferret, it should only be done in a supervised situation. Ferrets have been known to eat entire pieces of clothing. This can cause major blockages in their digestive tract and can lead to emergency situations. Dress them up if that is what you enjoy, but be sure to get them out of the clothing before you leave them alone.

Depending on the animal you end up owning, you may find that your ferret likes to sleep a lot. This is pretty common. Do not let it fool you though. These little critters are not lazy. They still will want and need exercise and time when they can run and scurry about. As a ferret owner, you should try to set aside at least an hour per day when you can bond with your pet and do some playing.

Baby ferrets are certainly cute. They have a real talent for capturing people's hearts. This is why so many folks today are looking to get a young ferret to take on as a pet. Problems sometimes pop up however when people make an impulsive decision to buy a ferret. After the new owners realize how much work is involved, the sometimes abandon the animals. This is a real problem today, so if you are a serious ferret owner, you might want to consider adopting a slightly older ferret who has lost its home.

Unless you are a qualified breeder, it is always a good idea to get your ferret spayed or neutered. This is more of a necessity with ferrets than with other animals. Left unaltered, ferrets can experience serious health problems. Females especially, will run into problems if they are allowed to mature and go into heat. If you have an unaltered ferret, see your veterinarian as soon as possible and get it fixed.

Some new ferret owners do not realize that ferrets will need to see a qualified veterinarian after they bring them home. They require regular care, just as a dog or cat would. Before you buy a ferret, make sure that there is a qualified vet in your area who will treat ferrets. If there is not, find out where the closest one is, and decide whether or not you are willing to drive there for check ups or any type of emergency situation with your pet ferret.
