4 Things You Should Consider Before Buying an Iguana

By Joe Ramon

1 - There are many places to have a look for to buy an Iguana

Iguanas can be discovered in a selection of places. Your local pet shop may have them. Another place to look for Iguanas is national pet chains like Petco. These days you may even buy an iguana online at sites like reptilesncritters.com and will have it sent to you by fed ex (Yikes). Sorry Canadians they only ship domestically. You may also look for Iguanas at local reptile rescues. To start take a look at the Green Society's list of reptile adoption agencies at greenigsociety.org

2 - Avoid feeding Pet Iguana's with insects.

There is a myth that it's good to add protein to the Iguana's diet and to feed them insects from time to time. While Iguanas may now and then eat insects in natural settings, it's really important to take into account is that Iguanas are plant eaters and eat a diet comprised of greens, vegetables some berries and some fruit. You may add to the mix some flower buds. Even though Iguanas can eat lettuce, giving an Iguana a diet based entirely on lettuce is not healthy. So back to the Insects, when you bring back home your favourite Iguana, don't start feeding it with all of the creepy insects you catch on your yard porch.

3 - Iguanas are pretty long creatures

Iguanas won't stay like that tiny pet you see in your strip mall pet shop. Grown Iguanas size and can reach between 4 - 6 feet in length. Females are a little smaller. So when you are planning on purchasing an Iguana, you want to prepare for a large enclosure.

4 - Iguanas can live for a while

If an Iguana is treated well it can reach almost 20 years. That is much more than a cat or a dog. The main caveat here is if they are taken care of. Alot of Iguanas aren't given a well-balanced diet that suits them and they develop all types of diseases.
