The Spanish people use greyhounds to a large extent in the hunting season in their country. They call the dogs Galgos in their language and the dogs have a great hunting skill and the instinct to work as hunting dogs. Nevertheless, there is another issue regarding the use of greyhounds in the country that has gotten the interest of animal rights groups and other international organizations.
The hunters in Spain have traditionally killed their hunting dogs when the hunting season comes to an end in January. They do this to get rid of the dogs because they have no intention of keeping them as pets until the beginning of the next hunting season. Because of this practice, the numbers of greyhound carcasses that litter the Spanish countryside are many at the climax of the hunting season.
It is not known how this practice originated but history records that nobles in the olden days would display hanged and tortured greyhounds publicly to prevent the peasants who may be thinking about protesting in groups from doing so. The Spanish usually torture the dogs, instead of hanging them to die right away.
The hunters have a planned way of tying the noose in a manner that makes sure that the dogs can support themselves using their rear legs for some days. They then start losing the energy they need for support once they get hungry and thirsty. They therefore fall into the hanging noose and suffocate to death.
Even though this practice has been taking place since many centuries it is only recently that it has been brought into the limelight. As it is the Spaniards are condemned for the maltreatment of bulls in the traditional sport of bullfighting but this barbaric act appears to rival or exceed that gruesome tradition in cruelty as well.
For some people the fact that the greyhounds are used then later put to death is a very inhumane act. For other people however it is the manner in which they are put to death which is a great cause of concern. It is estimated that more than 10,000 greyhounds are hanged this way on an annual basis.
There are other methods that the Spanish hunters use to get rid of the greyhounds in Spain. Among these methods is throwing them into abandoned wells. The other method is to let them die from starvation by leaving them as wanderers in the woods. It is possible to find burnt greyhound carcasses in the countryside.
The number of people in Spain who practice farming activities and hunting as their major way of getting food is over thirty million. Several people use greyhounds in the hunting season.
However the farmers argue that they do not have the facilities to provide adequate lodging and food for the greyhounds for the whole year and that is why they are killed following the hunting season. The real question then pertains to the way they are killed and not necessarily the reason for which they are killed.
