What To Know About Schnauzer Puppies

By Joyce Butler

Schnauzer is a breed of dog which has its origin in Germany. It was bred in the early fifteenth century throughout the sixteenth century. In the German language, schnauzer means snout and it is a colloquial for moustache. The bearded snout of the dog makes it distinct from other breeds. The bearded snout is the source of the name. The breed does not have the typical terrier temperament, which has made it to be viewed as a terrier-type dog. People can purchase schnauzer puppies from the many breeders available around the world.

Standard, giant, and miniature breeds are the three major types of schnauzers. Marketing of abnormally small miniatures is done using other names including toy and teacup. However, ti must be known that, toy and teacup are not breeds of their own. This is a fact that many people often confuse and it is good to know the real thing.

The size of the original schnauzer was the same as the one that is currently referred to as the Standard breed. It was bred for catching rats and acting as a guard and yard dog. The miniature breed originated as a result of crossbreeding the original dog with other breeds. Some of the breeds with which the original breed was crossbred to yield miniatures are affenpinscher and poodle.

Dogs that are referred to as miniatures are those that rise to a height of 30 centimeters at the shoulder and weigh between 6.4 and 9.1 kilograms. They have high levels of intelligence and energy. According to the American Kennel Club, also abbreviated as AKC, they vary in color a lot. Some of the recognized coat colors are black, silver, and pepper. They may have a single color or a combination of various colors.

The American Kennel Club does not accept dogs that have white or multi-colored coats as miniatures. Compared to giant and standard breeds, miniatures are weaker and should not live outside. They are very loyal to the owners. They befriend almost everybody and have rarely been seen being aggressive to strangers. However, they never hesitate to bark at strange people and animals.

The shoulders of Standard schnauzers stand around 1.5 feet from the ground and they weigh 14-20 kg. They are guarding dogs. In history, they have served as messengers in wars and in policing. The Red Cross organization has used them extensively for various applications.

Giant schnauzers grow up to a height of 61 centimeters at the shoulders. They weigh between 25 and 36 kilograms and are used as working dogs too. Their development was done in Swabia during the 17 century. Its development involved crossbreeding the standard schnauzers and various breeds including black Great Danes, German Shepherds, Boxers, Thuringian Shepherds, Rottweillers, Dobermans, and Bouvier des Flandres.

All purchase of puppies should be done from legitimate breeders. Unfortunately, many illegitimate breeders have entered the industry that it is hard to tell legitimate ones from those that are not. One should seek the counsel of a veterinarian in the purchasing process to pick the right puppy.
