What Wellness Physical Examinations Entail

By Joshua Stone

It is recommended that you take regular or annual health exam to enable professionals to monitor your health. The purpose of these wellness physical examinations is to prevent the escalation of any health condition by detecting it early enough. This preventive approach ensures that the risky condition does not get out of hand. Doctors monitor such health vitals as cholesterol, weight and blood pressure.

The exams are very personal and offer several benefits. This includes establishing the changes in your health since the last visit. The doctor will compare the results of the day with your history to make a progress diagnosis. The exam may focus on certain areas or may be a general check-up. Family history will play a part in determining the aspects to be examined because it is considered a risk factor.

Doctors use health history to develop prevention strategies. Other important factors that guide the examination include test results, age and personal health history. It is on these foundations that the doctor carries out the examination or recommends tests that will indicate a general health status. The results or findings will be used to map strategies to ensure a healthier future.

Health practitioner or doctor will peruse through and seek clarification on your health history. During the visit, you should update the examiner on your current status including uptake of any supplements, medication, changes at work, relationships, etc. This is a verbal session that does not involve any tests or contact. Your openness and willingness to reveal your health status to the examiner will be to your advantage.

There are vital signs that indicate your current health status and may be used to predict future situations. They include blood pressure readings, heart rate and respiratory rate. Your examiner records the readings and compares them with what was recording during the previous visit. It is recommended that your blood pressure be checked a minimum of once every two years. The frequency may change as you advance in age.

By looking at your physical appearance, a doctor can detect certain health challenges. The areas of concern include the head, neck, hair, abdomen, nails and limbs. This is a non-intrusive examination that may generate interest in further examination. The examiner will also be interested in the functioning of your heart and lungs to ensure that they are normal.

Blood tests complete the exam to give a comprehensive view of your condition. Vital checks conducted include blood count and chemistry panel. There are acceptable levels that should be maintained by all means. In case of an irregularity, necessary steps will be taken to correct the situation. For patients at risk of heart conditions like attacks, stroke and heart disease, lipid panel and cholesterol tests are conducted.

Women receive special attention based on their physiology. Some procedures administered include mammogram, a procedure recommended for all women between 50 and 74 years. Pulp smear, pelvic exam and breast exam are also recommended. Colorectal cancer tests are also administered with attention to other conditions like depression, diabetes and sexually transmitted infections. Depending on the results, you will be booked for further tests and medication or given a clean bill of health.
