Dyslexia was first identified in 1881, and research has been ongoing ever since to find its cause. It has been determined that the causes are related to neuroanatomy and genetics. Neuroimaging techniques like PET and fMRI have been used in research towards the causes. These techniques reveal that there is a correlation between reading difficulties and structural and functional differences in the brains of affected children.

Some individuals show less electrical activation in sections of the left hemisphere in the brain that get involved in reading. Such sections include inferior parietal lobule, ventral temporal cortex, middle ventral cortex, and inferior frontal gyrus. Assessment for dyslexia often targets these areas. The assessment can be done by a chartered psychologist with specialty in adult or child dyslexia.

The age of the person will determine the length of time needed to complete the assessment. How many areas are evaluated also plays a role in the duration.
