Interesting Facts About Exotic Shorthair Kittens

Domestic cats are many peoples definition of the perfect pet. The help keep themselves clean, have a designated area to use the bathroom and they are generally fun to watch and cuddle. There are many breeds of cats, everything from no hair at all to an unbelievable fur coat. They also offer a wide range of sizes and temperaments. Kittens as a whole are wonderful but each breed will have different characteristics. Some started as a version of a breed that one or two characteristics have changed their appearance. An example of this type of kitten is an Exotic Shorthair Kittens.

The breed has a very strong resemblance a Persian but have a much shorter coat. They are commonly referred to as a short haired version of the popular breed. They are a result of combining the Persian with an American shorthair. They later introduced the blood line to the Russian Blue and Burmese, changing the stature of the cats and kittens produced. They are known to be a stocky breed and tend to stay low to the ground.

They new body type was very popular in cat and kitten shows across the country. However, as the popularity grew, some American breeders became disqualified because of the evident crossbreeding. In the nineteen sixties, the result became recognized as a new breed, but it was under the condition that they only be crossbred with Persians. Being bred with a Persian made a one in four chance that a kitten be born with long hair, although they cannot be registered by the CFA, Cat Fanciers Association.

Because of responsible breeding and selection, the kittens have kept many of the characteristics that has made the Persian breed so popular. They have the big, oval head and a very short nose that gives them a flat faced appearance. They also have the round eyes Persians are known to have.

These kittens share many characteristics of their cousin the Persian, couple similarities being their loving and calm demeanor. They thoroughly enjoy being in the presence of their owner, many being the lap cats. Although, calm and patient, they also have the trait of playfulness and have plenty of energy.

Their grooming needs are another reason a lot of cat lovers are attracted to the breed. Their short hair is fairly easy to groom. Weekly brushings, the occasional bath and the cleaning from the cat itself helps keep the cat clean. Brushings are necessary to keep hairballs and shedding from getting bad.

The general health of the breed is pretty good. Due to careful breeding, they are not susceptible to disease. Although because of the shape of their head and face, they do have a few conditions that can be bothersome for the cat and owners. It effects the tear ducts and can often stain their fur around their face which requires regular cleanings with a warm, wet washcloth.
