Reasons Why Many Adults Desire Pets Over Having Children

By Robin Setser

Have you ever heard someone describe their kitten as their "baby" or their full-grown dog as their "child?" This isn't as uncommon as you might think, especially among younger adults. It seems like more and more of them prefer adopting pets as opposed to having children of their own. What are the reasons for this, though? Hopefully, by the end of this piece, we'll have a better understanding of this budding phenomenon.

One of the possible reasons why many young people see their pets as their "children" has to do with responsibility. Many men and women don't feel like they can handle the task of caring for other humans, regardless of how old they become. This is understandable, so they might see the idea of raising pets in this way as less of a task. There's less of a sense of responsibility in place, making it more appealing to some.

There's also the matter of companionship that pets seem to excel at more than children. Consider this for a moment: children are eventually going to become adults. What this means is that they will leave the home and venture off in order to partake in their own relationships. On the other hand, pets are unyieldingly loyal. For many men and women, this is another reason why pets are the best additions to any home.

Finally, seeing pets as "children" means that they'll be more likely to become adopted. Animal shelters are known for being crowded and when new animals are brought in, others have to be removed. With this in mind, it would make sense to adopt pets more often, ensuring that they have the most loving homes possible. This is one of the most sensible reasons to follow this path, and companies like Assisi Animal Health would be hard-pressed to argue.

Of course, there are many young people that would like to start families of their own, having kids when they feel like the time is right. For others, however, adopting animals and bringing them into their homes seems like a reasonable alternative. It's easy to see why so many people have taken this route. This doesn't mean that one group is right and the other is wrong. More than anything else, it comes down to preferences and personal beliefs.
