Five Small Dog Breeds That Will Melt Your Heart

By Jim Silverstein

Contrary to what you may have heard, you don't need a big space to own a canine. There are many small dog breeds that can thrive in apartments. They also happen to be cheaper to take care of and often require less exercise than bigger pooches. Here are five which always stand out.

There are many people who prefer small fluffy dog breeds. The Lhasa Apso is one such breed that you won't have to constantly pick up after since it doesn't shed. Unlike a lot of other types these actually make extremely good watchdogs because they are so alert. They are always ready to sound the alarm when they see or hear something suspicious.

A top contender on any small dog breeds list is the Boston terrier. They are known for their handsome black and white markings. This is one terrier that has a bulldog-like face which owners love. Unlike the bulldog however the Boston terrier will usually only weigh around 25 pounds at the most.

Without a doubt one of the best small dog breeds for active owners is the Jack Russell terrier. These dogs have a ton of energy so you will need to exercise them daily. They also tend to live for quite a long time which is of course a big benefit since you will have a many years to enjoy together.

Most of us can instantly recognize the dachshund with their long bodies but extra short legs. It is this body type that is many times compared to that of a hot dog. However it was purposely bred to be this way so that it could enter the underground burrows of animals when hunting.

There are a large number of dog fanciers who simply adore the bull terrier. However it is sometimes too big and a little too much dog to handle for some of them. If this sounds like you, the miniature bull terrier might be a good fit. Although it is recommended that you have experience if you want this breed since they can be very stubborn.

Each of these small dog breeds offers something a little different. So be sure to take the time you need to decide what you are looking for in a pet before you make any decisions. And of course there are many more to pick from, these are just the beginning!
