By Kevin McDonald

Sometimes when it comes to pet ownership we just want to go out of the box and get something exotic or different. When it comes to cats the same can also be said, we just want something other than an ordinary tabby. You may thus have been curious to buy an exotic breed once you saw a safari cats for sale advertisement in the net near you or even in the local paper. Before you do go out and buy this breed then it may be a good idea to get more information about it from this article.

The safari cat is basically the result of cross breeding of a domestic short hair cat with a Geoffroy's Cat. The Geoffroy's cat is a wildcat that is very much related to the ocelot and found in South America. Successful cross breeding has been difficult and very few successes have been made since the chromosomal pairs in wild cats are more or less more than those found in domestic cats.

Another reason why they are difficult to breed is that the male Geoffroy's cat may attack or even kill the domestic shorthair it is paired with, especially for the first generation. Once they do breed successfully, the result, called a safari, which can be called as the world's tallest domestic cat. It is a cat that is both gentle and calm in temperament.

As to date, only about 70 people are registered as owners of this particular breed, owing much to its rarity, with The International Cat Association. Other cats that belong to the exotic classification are the Savannah, Chausi and Bengals, but the Safari is considered as "The Rolls Royce of Exotics". Exotics again is a term given to offspring due to a pairing between a wild parent and a domestic one.

They look very smooth and svelte physically and they do come in many different colors. Color wise, they are unique in that they have different colors depending on the region of the world that they come from. Some will be colored deep orange while some will be black to silvery grey.

Maintenance wise it is not difficult to look after this breed as they are fairly low maintenance. They do not require any additional care or attention. They can be fed normal cat food, but for most owners they will prefer to give them a special diet. This diet is usually a mixed diet that is balanced with raw meat.

This cat is very intelligent and also naturally curious. Due to its wild ancestry it is also very active and highly curious, which can get it into trouble sometimes. This is a cat that is more suited to very active owners.

Temperament wise it is quite a joy to have around when it is properly socialized. It is very smart and thus can be termed as the cat version of the dog, and can also listen and follow simple to complex commands. Like the dog, it can get close to family members very fast, and is usually not trusting and ever watchful of strangers. The Safari is a cat that is also quite long live, living anywhere from fifteen to twenty years.
