Advice For Dog Training For Beginners

By Graham Sheppard

When you begin your dog training you have to realize that there are a few different things you need to teach your puppy before you can let them roam around your house freely. The two most important things you need to train your dog to do are to not jump on people, and to not bite people.

In the beginning, it may seem like your puppy jumping on you and nipping at your hand is incredibly cute and harmless. New puppy owners will see these types of actions as harmless and adorable. Though it may seem like he is just trying to socialize and trying to interact with others, you need to teach it that it can socialize in other ways. If your puppy learns that jumping on others is an acceptable way of socializing, when it grows to be an adult, it may get to the size where jumping on someone could actually be rather dangerous. You don't want your dog to harm anyone, especially little kids who can't handle such behavior physically. Make sure you teach your puppy while it is still young that this is not tolerable behavior.

The easiest time to train your dog to stop jumping on others is while it is still young. When your puppy starts to jump on someone, simply put its feet back on the floor. When he stands there looking at you, be sure to give him a multitude of praise. At this point, you should try and create an alternative for him for jumping. He is simply trying to socialize with others when he jumps. Instead, teach him to raise out its paw. This isn't nearly as dangerous, and you can even offer him a treat for being so good!

Be sure to be consistent while training your puppy. You must let others in your household know that your dog is in a training program, and that they must abide by the same rules and regulations that you do. If others in your house let your puppy jump on them, he or she will probably continue to develop bad habits.

Another thing to train your puppy to do is to refrain from biting people. Every puppy goes through a period of time where it bites others. Once again, it may seem cute at first, but once it grows into an adult, this type of activity becomes more and more dangerous.

Usually mothers will be the ones that teach their young not to bite others. Since you aren't its actual mother, you will have to be the one to scold your pup whenever he tries to bite someone. Be sure to scold them whenever they start biting another living object.

The best way to get your puppy to stop biting is to have it socialize with other dogs. If you enroll him in a puppy training program, he will get to socialize with others. Naturally, if your puppy starts to bite other dogs, it will quickly realize that this is not the way to go if it wants to make friends and socialize without being scolded by others. Make sure you get your dog socializing early on in its life so it doesn't develop bad habits later on.

Try to give your puppy something to chew on so it can bite on something instead of others. You must teach it that biting is an acceptable act, just not biting others.

Remember that while you are dog training, that you must be consistent with your praise along with your criticism.
