Man uses dogs in various capacities. However, dogs are dubbed as man's best friends because these animals are generally kept as pets - as loyal companions. The behavior and the appearance of the dog is an indication of the care the pet receives from the owner. If the well being of the pet is important to the owner he/she would make sure that the dog is provided with the best care. Aside from providing the basic needs of the pet, the owner would also make time to socialize, to obedience train and to discipline the pet.
It is not uncommon for people to treat the dog as family members. Considered as the baby of the family, dogs would receive all the love and attention from its human friends. With its lively and playful personality, a pet dog will be a kind of living toy that will be the ideal companion of the kids. Because these pets are pampered and spoiled it is not uncommon for them to manifest unwanted behaviors. As such, the dog would be dominant and the owners would give in to the whims of the pet.
Incessant barking, filching food, raiding trash cans, inappropriate chewing and jumping at people are only some of the bad habits of dogs. Dogs are not like humans thus they should not be expected to know what is right and what is wrong. Disciplining the pet though is one of the responsibilities of a dog owner.
If the dog is naughty, too effusive with its greetings or showing an aggressive behavior towards other pets, controlling the pet would certainly be necessary. How would you discipline your dog? Would you use physical punishment or would you rather let the dog accept you as the leader of the pack by using toys and treats to make the dog follow your orders?
Physical punishment may not be effective as even though dogs are intelligent animals they may not be aware why they are being punished. Something that will be remembered by the dog like a spray of ice cold water or the rattling of coins in a tin can would be a more effective tool to discipline the dog. Every time the pet is at its hobby of raiding the trash can or barking at the passersby or tormenting the cat, use the spray bottle on the dog's face or rattle the coins in the tin can. A dog understanding the fact that it will be hit again by cold water on the face or it would be startled by the rattling sound once it torments the cat or jumps at people would refrain from doing these unwanted acts.
