A New Baby Arrives - How About The Jealous Puppy?

By Jade Davidson

Having a new baby with an unprepared puppy will result in an over jealous puppy, thinking that the attention has been taken away from him. This negative emotions can be destructive. We should try the following steps to make sure that this will never happen:

1. Your puppy might mistake the new baby for a toy and might try to play around with it, to make sure it doesn't happen, prepare him ahead by buying a toy doll and treating it just as how you would treat your baby. Have your dog on a leash so that he will always be around to observe your whole activities around the baby. This will help him understand that your life now revolves around the baby, but that he is a part of the baby's existence and that you aren't neglecting him.

2 You can schedule some play dates between your puppy and other kids in the neighborhood so that he will realize that there is actually nothing to be fearful of these little human beings. Be sure to have a leash the first few times he will be socializing with the little ones, just to be safe.

3. If your puppy shows aggression when you are attempting to socialize him with the kids, realize that only a professional can help you handle the matter in the most correct manner, so contact one now.

4 The baby's nursery would naturally be ready weeks prior to the baby's arrival. So, let your puppy be used to it by bringing him there as often as you can and acquaint him how he should behave inside the nursery by saying the "NO" command each time he attempts to touch any sensitive things inside the nursery. These tips will make sure that your puppy will not feel neglected and that your beloved newborn will always be safe around the puppy.
