The Egyptian mau is somewhat of a unique cat breed. Many will say that it looks like a dark colored leopard or even has similar looks to that of a lynx, due to its naturally occurring spots. It is a very athletic breed, and can run up to 30 miles per hour.

Many previous owners of this breed will swear to you and to anyone else for that matter, that it has springs and not legs. This is because it can jump vertically from a resting position up to three feet or more. It is also a very active and playful cat so one must make sure it has the necessary space to romp around in, alongside the absence of course of any fragile or breakable items.

A reserved and gentle personality will what many will describe as the general temperament of this breed. It is however, one cat that will crave attention a majority of the time, especially as it ages. If one plans to travel a lot with it or enter it into competitions in the future, it may be a good idea to let it socialize with other people so that jitters later on can be avoided.

These cats can also be classified as cats that love to eat. And because of this there may be the danger of overfeeding it, especially if one mistakes its wanting affection as overtures of it being hungry. If it gets used to overfeeding, it will refuse to eat lesser portions in the future, in effect it goes on an animal version of a hunger strike.

A quite surprising thing about this breed of cat is that it has the ability to sing. It will sing like a small bird when it is pleased, rather than purr, as it will chortle and chirp. This chortling and chirping sound is also exhibited when it is excited or curious about something, like when it sees a new plaything or something to chase like an insect for example.

In terms of reproduction, this breed has a fairly long gestation period, ranging from 63 days to 70 days. If it does go over 70 days sometimes, it should be no cause for alarm. This is because they give birth pretty easily.

Thus covered in this article are some good baseline facts that you should know about the breed prior to your purchase. Remember to also look at other factors that are crucial for you to become a good cat owner.
