Basic Information In Searching For Katahdins For Sale

By Kenneth Green

Katahdins are a breed of sheep domestically developed on United States and was a result of crossbreeding selected breeds. The lambs were chosen based upon hair coat, high fertility, meat type conformation, and flocking instinct for further breeding. These breeds were considered to be first in reading industry standards basing on the quality of their carcass.

Their popularity within the country in recent years has increased because wool prices is now low while the cost for shearing is high. That is why farms are having a Katahdins for sale business because this is becoming popular with people looking to a new addition to their livestock. And this breed sheds after winter their coat so no need for having them sheared.

Their hair can be of any color because the emphasis for them is not on their appearance but instead on their production. This is because they are raised for lamb meat and not as a source of wool since they do not grow them. Their ability to shed has become helpful as shearing them is more expensive than what it cost before.

This breed is resistant against parasites also which is an inherited trait from one of their ancestral breeds like the Saint Croix. Due to this characteristic, this makes them an option with low cost while being highly productive for commercial shepherds. Animals like these are hardy also and have similar eating habits with goats that is useful for keeping grasses and weeds down.

They also strip the bark of any deciduous tree that also has smooth and immature bark like pines and cedars. Seeing animals climbing on top of big hay bale is common until they are a year old which makes it necessary to provide protection for the bales. This is to prevent them to climb on their top and excessive waste.

Use online search engines in finding them and have the results filtered to display those who are selling them nearby only. Doing so excludes the ones that do not offer them from your list.

You can also ask for suggestions from your colleagues, relatives and friends, specifically those which bought from them previously. They would be sharing to you their experiences in buying them and if they were satisfied with the animal meant for breeding or food. Knowing these details will be beneficial since it helps in narrowing down the choices possible.

Get to know these farms more through performing some research regarding their background and get a few details of their experience, expertise and capabilities. You can visit review sites as well to read reviews written by their previous customers who shared their opinions. Reading them is helpful in getting ideas of their quality and if complaints against them were raised.

Inquire how much does each sheep cost and that depends on what purpose they were raised for. The ones bred for meat have a different price than those for breeding. Getting reservations is also common when one is already pregnant.
