Can You Get Large Dogs That Dont Drool

By Richard Green

Some people will not consider owning a big dog because they think they all slobber. It is true that there are breeds which are more likely to have excess saliva and spread that saliva around the home and onto nearby people. Some animals seem to have strings of saliva hanging from their mouth nearly all the time but there are some large dogs that dont drool.

A dog will produce saliva when expecting food or chewing just like a human. As Pavlov discovered, a pet can produce saliva if it thinks it will be fed regardless of whether it is feeding time or there is food around. The amount produced varies by breed and whether it then becomes a horrid mess depends on whether the dog can keep it in its mouth.

Breeds that have long droopy jowls and flat faces are less able to hold their slobber in their mouth. Often it will hang from the jowl and then they might then shake their head to clear the offending dribble. This may result in blobs over walls, furniture and friends who are in the line of fire. People who own breeds like mastiffs normally carry a supply of kitchen towel or tissues to mop up when the dribble is first seen.

For people who do not want to wipe slobber from furniture and clothes but do like large dogs then select a breed that has a short jowl. Jowls are the droopy lip flaps most prominent in breeds like Great Danes, Mastiffs and Boxers. Breeds with shorter jowls are normally in the hound or working dog groups as long flapping jowls would be problematic when herding and hunting.

There are many decent sized dogs that fall into these categories. Any of the Shepherd dogs, Afghan Hounds, Borzois, Wolfhounds and Dalmatians are just a few that have short jowls and more pointed faces. Another majestic dog the loves to work Is the Alaskan Malamute. The largest of the huskies this wolf like animal needs to be kept busy as they get bored easily.

Another beautiful looking working dog is the Dalmatian. It has a short coat with its distinctive black spots. Short jowls and face mean saliva is not a problem, but they will need a lot of exercise. Originally carriage dogs, they would run alongside the horse drawn coaches of their masters and retain this capacity for endless running.

The super model of the dog world has to be the Afghan Hound. The long pointed face means saliva is rarely a problem but its cost needs a lot of maintenance. Even the shorter coated Irish Wolfhound needs regular grooming but slobber should not be an issue. For glamour without grooming the Saluki is lovely looking dog but like Dalmatians they do need a lot of exercise and can run like the wind.

It is worth bearing in mind that salivation is normal and necessary. No dog is totally slobber free. Each individual animal will have its own traits and even if a breed is classed as low slobber, a defect in their mouth or overly long tongue may mean that particular pup will salivate more than usual. If you are really do cannot tolerate the odd wet patch on your clothes or furniture perhaps you should consider a different pet.
