The Boston Terrier has a distinguished appearance, similar to a man dressed in a tuxedo which has earned it the nickname "The American Gentleman". Intelligent, lively, and affectionate, this breed is a great choice for any loving family. If considering adopting Boston Terriers puppies for sale, it pays to first learn all there is to know about these dogs to determine if they are the right choice.

This breed originates from Boston, Massachusetts and is derived from crossing an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier. Their earliest predecessors were larger in size and used primarily for pit-fighting. It is one of the few exclusively American breed dogs.

The appearance of the Boston Terrier is characterized by a small but muscular body, squarish head with pointed ears, wide-set eyes, and a short muzzle. Their coats consist of fine, short fur which can be black, brindle, or seal with white patches in color. On average they stand about 15-17 inches tall and weigh 12-25 pounds.

Boston Terriers are known for their affectionate nature and quirky personalities. They are quick learners and generally not hard to train, although they may develop "small dog syndrome" if their masters do not exercise proper authority over them. These pups are good playmates for children and normally get along with other household pets. Sometimes housetraining can be a challenge, so gentle firmness is necessary.

This breed is a flexible one which can adapt to both city and country life. They are happy romping about in a yard with children or being taken for a walk on the leash. Although they don't have a high exercise requirement, it is still important to provide these dogs with enough physical and mental stimulation as to keep them entertained and in good health.

Boston Terriers live to be about 12 years old on average, and sometimes even older. They are a breed which is not plagued with many health issues, except they do tend to be somewhat more prone to eye conditions such as cataracts. During exercise, it is important to not allow the dog to get over-exerted, as this can bring on respiratory problems.

This breed has a short, smooth coat of fur requires little in the way of grooming and does not have a strong odor. Only an occasional bath and brushing with a firm brush is needed. The face area, in particular the eyes need to be wiped with a cloth daily as well. Nail clipping is also necessary once in awhile. After the dog has been playing outside, the eyes and ears should be checked for grass seed lodged in them which can cause irritation. The ears also need to be inspected for ticks.

The type of personality these cute and bright pups have makes them a great friend for anyone, from the very young to the elderly. Attentive and sharp, they can be ideal watchdogs and at the same time perfect to cuddle. If looking at a litter of Boston Terriers puppies for sale one should ask to see both or either of the parents, and pick a pup with a personality that is friendly rather than pushy or timid.
