How To Get Rid Of Fleas In Carpet And Rugs

By Amanda Baird

When trying to figure out how to get rid of fleas in carpet, you first need to consider how to go about it the right way. If you do not do it correctly the first time over, you can be sure that they will come back. To ensure that this does not happen there are a few steps that are easy to follow and, if done right, will take care of the situation permanently.

The first thing to do is clean all the carpets in the house with a steam cleaner. The heat from the steam is high enough kill off any of the little pests as well as their eggs so that they won't come back. A good idea is to go over each room two times in order to get as many of them as possible. This may not get rid of all of them, but it will get rid of most.

The next step is to get a mixture of salt and borax. The mixture should be in equal parts and spread generously over all carpeting in each room. The salt and borax mixture will dehydrate and kill and of the nasty pests that it comes into contact with. It will also be able to kill any larvae and eggs that may be hanging around still.

Vacuum again thoroughly to clean up all the salt and borax as well as the dead fleas. You will want to do this about twelve hours after the mixture has been spread around the house. This should give it enough time to work its magic.

This has to be done in every room of the house. The best way to do it is all at the same time since they will travel from room to room very quickly. Try to get it done just before bed so that the mixture can work its magic as you sleep. Then you can just clean it all up first thing in the morning and it will have little to no impact on your daily activities.

While you are cleaning the carpets in your house it would be best to keep any pets you have somewhere else. This is because as soon as you start to clean up the carpets they will begin to search for a safe place to get away from it. Many of these pests will just find their way back into your pets fur.

While you are cleaning the carpeting in your house you are going to also want to take care of any soft furniture that they can also be camping out in, such as couches and cushions. Anything that can be put through the washing machine should be. Once everything has been well cleaned cover it in the mixture the same way you did all the carpets.

Knowing how to get rid of fleas in carpet won't make much difference if you don't get rid of the ones in your pets. Give them a very thorough cleaning with a very good anti flea shampoo. You will also want to clean all the places that they like to spend time, both indoors and out, to be sure that they don't pick them up again.
