Protect Your Dog From Allergies By Switching To Hypoallergenic Dog Beds

By Tara Daniels

People are often afflicted by various environmental allergies. Hay fever, allergies to certain chemicals and dyes, and food allergies cause problems for humans every day. However, many people are just now realizing that animals can have these same allergies. Doctors and animals associations are beginning to report that pet allergies and the number of animals suffering from allergies is steadily increasing. An effective solution to this maddening problem is using hypoallergenic dog beds in your home.

Many are confused by what hypoallergenic means, but the definition is simple. It means that an item is made from materials that do not cause allergic reactions. Pet bedding and some human bedding that are made from common synthetic materials are known to cause horrible reactions. Simply put, these materials do not.

Using a specialized blend of organic and all-natural bedding, this type of bed help diminish allergic reactions. It helps to eliminate the chance of your pet having negative reactions to common allergens. Atopy, which is what an allergic reaction in pets is called, usually depends on receptive your pet is to allergens when exposed to them. Any material that is non-hypoallergenic will allow allergens to build up over time.

Many believe that simply by frequently washing the bedding or cleaning the home will eliminate allergens, however that is simply not true. It is just a temporary solution to an ongoing problem. Once the bedding is infested with dust mites, they can spread to furniture where the dog may sleep. Dust mites also cause numerous problems for people as well as pets. It is very important to make the switch to hypoallergenic bedding because of its ability to resist allergens and dust mites. Taking this step will make the living space more comfortable for pets and humans.

Hypoallergenic bedding is made from organic buckwheat hulls, hemp, cotton, and green fiber, which is just recycled plastic. What is so special about these materials? Other than the fact that they are resistant to allergens, these materials, especially hemp, are tear resistant and can resist damage caused by the sun and mildew.

Wool fleece is also a common bedding material. It is organic; therefore it naturally has a resistance to mildew, mold, and dust mites. It is also known for being resistant to odor causing bacteria. Wool fleece and other natural materials are treated with a natural form of lanolin that protects animals from fleas.

Because of the growing popularity of hypoallergenic material, pet beds are not difficult to find. Some animals suffer from a very specific allergy so vets will recommend a certain type of bedding. In those cases, most of the vets will carry that product in their clinic. If not, they will refer you to a store that does.

Hypoallergenic dog beds can cost as little as twenty-five dollars or be very expensive, depending on the type of material they are made from. The best thing about these beds is that they are eco-friendly and can be found at most pet stores or online retailers. They are great investments even if your animals are not prone to allergies.
