Selecting Dog Obedience Training Colorado Springs

By Kristen Baird

For any pet owner who intends to take their pooch out in public or around other people, it is imperative that the animal be well behaved. It should be able to follow basic commands and remain under control. There are varied options available for dog obedience training Colorado Springs, Co and the surrounding area.

These classes are about so much more than simply teaching one's pet a few fun tricks. Just as children must be taught proper behavior, so should dogs, and as early as possible. They need to learn how to walk properly on the leash, to sit and wait for food or other commands, to remain calm around strangers, guests or when being handled, as well as any specialized tasks they are expected to perform.

Most people begin their search with recommendations given by vets, groomers, friends and co-workers. This should be followed by online research to see if the suggested individuals are qualified as consultants, trainers or instructors, as well as what type of classes they offer. One's personal situation, and the pup's personality, will determine which of the three teaching categories is the most appropriate.

Following the research and paring down of the list of potentials, the owner should physically visit the location of two or three instructors to observe their techniques. One thing to watch for are how clear their communication skills are with the animals, as well as with the people. Another note to make is in regard to the way they teach, reinforce and correct each command.

Some pooches may need a little extra work in order to grasp certain behaviors. A lot can be learned about the instructor by noticing if they give the pup the personal attention he needs for them to understand, or if they simply brush it aside and rush to the next command. Owners are responsible for repeating each lesson when away from class so that it becomes an automatic habit for the pet to respond properly.

A key thing to remember when beginning the search is that each animal has their own personality and it is imperative that the chosen instructor understand how to deal with each unique pet style. Dealing with an aggressive canine is going to require completely different tactics than handling one who is nervous, shy and timid. Consider the pooch when making the selection between group classes and private sessions.

If a pet has a very social attitude, is friendly and playful but listens fairly well might do best in a group setting where they can follow the crowd. Pups who have issues with authority, are temperamental, stubborn or aggressive should probably be given private lessons so that they can get personalized attention. Let the personality of the animal guide this decision.

Many pet behavioral problems can be addressed and managed through an effective conditioning program. The animals can learn things such as how to remain calm and not jump on people or other dogs, controlled barking, proper meal time manners, leash walking, obeying commands and several other things. Well behaved pups bring peace and happiness to their owners.
