The word vet is the short form for veterinary. Veterinary medicine is practiced by professionals referred to as veterinary physicians. They deal with the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and study of diseases, disorders, and injuries in animals only. In British English, the phrase veterinary surgeon is used to refer to these professionals. American and Australian English use the phrase veterinary physician. Most states regulate and protect how the title veterinarian is used within its borders. One has to have specific training in that field in order to be referred to by that title. Practitioners can only practice veterinary medicine after completing formal education, receiving a license and being registered. In most cases, veterinarians work in clinical settings where they treat animals directly. There are many common aspects between traditional and veterinary medical care. The first similarity is that both field emphasize prophylactic treatment a lot in order to prevent and avoid future ailments. Vaccines are used widely for this purpose. Dental illnesses are also avoided through dental prophylaxis. Pet owner education is also an approach used to avoid future disease outbreaks.

Like other fields of study, veterinary medicine also has specialties in which practitioners can specialize. Some of the general topics covered by specialties include dentistry, surgery, and anesthesia. Some focus may also be given to organ systems under specialties like dermatology and cardiology. Unlike traditional medicine, veterinary medicine combines surgical and medical aspects of biological systems.

Workers in the US seem to be concentrated more in the private sector. Of all workers in this field, seventy five percent are in the private sector. Some also specialize in research so that they work in research facilities studying animals. Veterinary hospitals and schools offer employment for practitioners who treat small animals, On the other hand, those concerned with large animals work in colleges, zoos, charities, farms, pharmaceutical companies, and animal food companies among others.

Professionals in this field earn fairly good salaries. Those with more experience and higher academic achievement generally earn more. Private sector workers earn more than those in the public service. Currently there is an ongoing debate about various cosmetic issues such as debarking of dogs, docking of tails, declawing of cats, and cropping of ears.
