How To Get Help For Blind Dogs

By Tammie Caldwell

Most people think that having a blind dog can be very exhausting. It is at first but after a while when one is used to, you will find that it can be fun and a fulfilling experience. At first its scary to have such a responsibility thrown at your lap all of a sudden when your dog becomes blind. Help for blind dogs is a very sensitive issue since a dog that is visually impaired will need more constant care and it could be overwhelming if you do not learn the right way to give the care.

Moving your furniture around can prove a hard task for your dog to maneuver around the home. Try not to move anything to be out of place from what they are used to. The floors should be clear at all times. Remove objects that could hinder their movements. When a dog constantly bumps into something when moving, it will be scared.

The favorite part of the day for any dog is going for walks. It is healthy for the both of you so as much as your pet is blind, take him for a walk. There a few things you have to do differently like using a harness that has a short leash which will help you get more control over the dog and also it will feel more secure because you will be closer.

Cushion or Cover the sharp corners and objects in your home so that they will not run into them and in the end hurt themselves. The surfaces that could be detrimental include door facings or cabinets. Floor runners that are textured can be used to guide the movements of your dog from room to room in your home.

Normally, when got by surprise or when someone sneaks up on you, you get startled. It is the same thing that will happen to the dog only it will be worse because the pet is visually impaired. It might end up terrified and really anxious and will not be comfortable. Also, try to fence your compound especially if your dog spends most of its time outside.

Attaching phrases and familiar words to your daily communication with your pet helps it feel connected to you as the sound of your voice reassures and gives it a sense of security. The words that you can use include; stay, eat, sit and go. You can create your own words that you will both be comfortable with depending on your daily routine.

When you have visitors in your house, it is advisable to tell them in advance that your pet is blind so that they will not end up trying to pet your dog resulting in it being hostile hence an ugly scene at your house. When you go for a walk or whenever you are outside the house, put a sticker or a bandana on your dog so that people will be mindful of its condition.

In summary dealing with a visually impaired dog will be easier if a leash is available. The harness helps the dog to know where the owner is, which restores its confidence. You should give freedom to your dog to roam during the day, but at night you should confine it.
