The Definition Of A Crazy Cat Lady

By Tammie Caldwell

There are some women who are obsessed with cats for a number of reasons. Some genuinely want to help cats because they are strays and do not have anywhere else to go. Others do it because they are lonely and need company. In both cases, society has coined the term crazy cat lady to describe women who have a large number of cats in a small living space.

If a woman has a genuine love for cats, they might find it very difficult to see a stray cat and ignore it. There are many animals in various cities that have been abandoned, lost, or abused in some way. If they happened to be found by someone who cares enough about animals, they have a better chance of surviving as oppose to being on their own.

One day as she is walking down the street, she noticed a gray cat with green eyes walking towards her. The cat looked like it has not eaten in days, since it looks so thin and very scared. This woman felt so sorry for the cat, that she decided to take it into her home and care for it. It did not have an owner since there was no collar around its neck. However, this act of kindness did not end with one cat.

This does not bother the woman because they are providing a useful service as far as they are concerned. They might even believe that more people should be doing this for cats and dogs since these are the types of animals that are commonly found without a home. So despite the struggle, they continue because they feel they are meant to do this.

On the other hand, some women might take in many cats because they are lonely and need company. They might have been married at one time and are now widowed, and probably have children that are now adults and have moved out. This can cause a person to seek out a way to satisfy the emptiness that they feel and they might do this by having lots of cats.

She saw her first cat wondering on her front lawn one day and decided to feed it. It did not have an owner since she asked the neighbors if the cat belonged to any of them. So she decided to take this animal in and make it her pet. She was so happy to be able to provide for this pet, that her sadness and loneliness gradually disappeared.

The animals have now replaced the need for human contact. This makes it difficult for others to form any type of meaningful relationship with these women. Their obsession with their cats makes it difficult for someone to address this issue because if they do, they might make the woman angry creating further isolation. So most people will see them as being crazy since they do not know how to talk to them.

These are the two main types of women who take many cats into their home. What is similar is that in both cases, they usually do not have large homes or are very rich to take care of all of these animals. Understanding why an individual might behave in this manner might help in creating positive solutions both for the women and the animals.
