What You Need To Know When Choosing A Labrador Retriever Breeder

By Scott Watson

There are many different breeds of dog and they all have specific characteristics that make them appealing to different people. If you are in love with labs and want one that is purebred, here is what you need to know about choosing a Labrador retriever breeder that will sell you a healthy, well adjusted puppy to become your new furry family member.

You may be surprised to learn that these were primarily hunting dogs. They were bred to go in the water and swim in order to retrieve birds or animals that a hunter had killed. This translates into dogs that love water and swimming and which have very soft mouths. It also means that they love to play fetch and are more than happy to play this game for hours. It also means that they have fur that is good at repelling water and tails that help them swim and steer through the water.

Keep in mind that some dogs are better hunters than others. If this is what you want your adult canine to excel at make sure that you work with a breeder who specializes in hunting dogs. There is no reason why a hunting dog cannot also be a good family companion as well.

It is important to ask about the health of these dogs before agreeing to bring home a particular puppy. Like other large breeds, these dogs can be prone to certain health issues. Some of these can be quite serious. Hip dysplasia is common in these dogs and a reputable breeder will be careful to minimize the chances of their dogs developing this medical condition.

Some individuals will let puppies go when they are younger while others want to let the young dogs stay with their mothers as long as possible. A dog that stays with its mother and its litter mates will learn a lot even in a few short weeks.

You may be surprised to learn that breeders do not always have puppies available all of the time. This is usually because they want their bitches to rest between litters. Bearing a litter of puppies takes a lot out of a dog and if she is bred repeatedly it can mean that her puppies become weak or sickly. You may find that you are further ahead to go with a breeder who rests their dogs between litters.

A lot of breeders will allow you to meet a litter of pups before you choose one to bring home. It is not unusual to have to pay a deposit once you have figured out which puppy you want. Don't be afraid to talk to the breeder and find out what the different personality traits are for each of the puppies. They may be able to recommend a particular personality type that will suit your family situation better than another would.

Kennel clubs will often have the names of potential breeders for you to check out. You might also want to talk to local veterinary hospitals and shelters in order to find out the names of breeders that they recommend. It is also important to find out who to stay away from especially if there is someone who is producing unhealthy puppies or pups that have significant behavioral issues.
